A tragedy at the SPI Tor mine near Butte leaves ten miners facing extreme exhaustion. Four succumb soon after rescuers reach them. An unnamed hero, described as a brave shop boss, is credited with aiding relief efforts amid the perilous conditions.
James D. Moore, shift boss in the Speculator, died while guiding eight men to safety on the 2,600-foot level after a fire. He ordered bulkhead construction at the 2,200-foot level, tested air, and kept up morale as water and mud filled the shaft. Moore died as they were lifted toward safety, leaving a wife, mother, brothers, and supporters. He had been with the mine three years.
Moore died minutes after being lifted on the cage in a Topeka incident. He had moved from San Jose California to Butte three years ago and leaves a wife at 426 North Alabama, a San Jose mother at 95 South Second Street, and two brothers in San Jose. He had worked about three months in the Speculator. Kansas heat records broke as a heat wave gripped the state with 35 degrees recorded in Topeka and Arkansas City reporting extreme conditions.
The Wilson case was adjourned with no immediate date set for resumption. Court officials cited complications in scheduling and witness availability as the reason for the delay.
Ernest Sullau assistant foreman at the Speculator mine died while returning into the fire zone to save companions after a lamp ignited flammable cable insulation. He urged others to safety before being overcome by smoke and gas, with several miners saved or unaccounted as rescue efforts continued.
Arriving from Denver, the experts will stay until all bodies are recovered and the mine is deemed safe for workers. The main focus yesterday was locating survivors, with removal of the dead paused for now.
June 11 forecast calls for mostly cloudy conditions on Tuesday then fair and warmer weather on Wednesday. Temperatures are expected to rise with dry skies and light winds.
A large funeral procession formed yesterday through Hutt City honoring five Balkan mine victims. Montana State band led the line past the courthouse as thousands paid tribute to the fallen men, identified as George Janicleh, Chris Vukovich, Steve Zieleh, George Tehovilo, and Joe Martinovicn.
Mrs Manus Duggan says she has not given up hope that Manus Duggan is alive and will return. She waits with her mother on East Park Street for word, keeping courage for her unborn child and denying any plan to call him off shift. She remains hopeful until his body is found or he is located.
Robert Linton vice president and managing director of North Butte, arrived in Butte after receiving word of the Granite Mountain disaster. An engineer and mining veteran, he traveled from New York by train to assume duties and help ease President Cole’s workload.
