Report notes Japan shows little enthusiasm for peace conditions, while Russia signals continued fighting if the foe remains strong. Paragraph suggests harsh terms may come from Japan and hard stance from Moscow.
After a two day visit with Mrs. Roosevelt at their Charlottesville home the president returns to Washington. Officials indicate formal replies from Russia and Japan may soon be made public as preliminary peace negotiations proceed toward an eventual conference in Washington with plenipotentiaries from both belligerents.
The Chicago Team Owners association with 8 000 union teamsters voted 155 to 3 to remain neutral in the labor dispute. They planned a referendum after earlier talks of forcing deliveries to strikebound firms. Negotiations have stalled as both sides are far apart and leaders seek control ahead of the national convention in Philadelphia.
St. Petersburg reports Russia waits for Japan to set time and place to hand terms. The Russian representative, a limited plenipotentiary, will receive terms for decision on peace talks and may secure a brief armistice allowing continued troop movement within prescribed limits until a meeting occurs.
The joint irrigation committees of the House and Senate and the California delegation arrived in Los Angeles after visiting Riverside and Redlands. They noted the contrast between the developing Imperial Valley and the highly developed irrigation around Redlands, Riverside, highlighting the irrigation problem as a major area for potential government action.
Alfred L. Picard an electrical engineer and contractor once head of the A. J. Picard company and prominent in Boston business shot himself at the Hotel Rexford after his Boston wife refused to see him. Picard had recently returned from Hope Idaho where he had ranching work and previously disappeared with a stenographer colleague.
Leadville Colorado reports the stabbing murder of James Sammon a pioneer saloon owner found behind the bar. robbers knocked him down with a stone then stabbed him severing the jugular. thieves looted 1500 to 3000 in money and checks from the saloon and sleeping quarters.
A Blackfoot Idaho special reports a gun battle near Jackson's Hole Wyoming after rustlers seized about a head of cattle and rode toward a railroad hub. A posse pursued for six miles with a running fight. two rustlers and one rancher were killed and many wounded. Killed outlaws named Robinson and Lewis. rancher’s name not learned.
Special Dispatch to the Standard from Red Lodge Montana June 11 rumor has circulated that Will Greenough drowned in Clarke Fork river above Chance. The wagon and team were said found floating downstream with the ford suspected due to high water. No confirmation has been received and the report is considered unverified.
Relatives learn Eric Michaelson, a four year penitentiary convict from Kalispell, has been pardoned after a $40,000 Iowa estate was deposited in a Deer Lodge bank. He was imprisoned for dynamiting a safe and theft and, despite controversy over his pardon, may soon be released to spend the fortune connected to his conviction.
The Pennsylvania Special pulled into Union Station and left for New York at 1 05 AM with speeds reported near 103 miles per hour. On one stretch 27 miles were covered in 19 minutes and four record miles in 35 87 40 and 38 seconds respectively.
Liberty Missouri June 11 The jury serving in the Agnes Meyers homicide case found Meyers of Kansas City guilty of murder in the first degree for killing her husband Clarence Meyers. The verdict carries the death penalty by hanging.
The Pennsylvania Railroad introduced an 18 hour service between Chicago and New York. The new flyer named the Pennsylvania Special departed Chicago at 2 45 PM marking a history making journey.
Closing Day capped the most successful Montana Sportsmen's Association event in history with Anaconda earning a large share of honors. Experts praised Montana marksmen as the meet concluded and visits to Butte and Anaconda were planned.
At Bozeman on June 11 1905 UMW Drumgoole won the handicap medal with a 91 score at 100 singles from the 22 yard line. Anaconda shooters led by Mathewson Peckover and Drumgoole argued for Anaconda as next site while Billings and Yellowstone delegates backed their towns. Colonel Selvidge urged unanimity as Montana hosted a highly praised tournament acclaimed for its strict businesslike conduct and strong sportsmanship.
