Former Chief of Police Devery hosts a large picnic in the Ninth District inviting between fifteen and twenty thousand women and children as his guests. The event underscores his campaign drive and public presence in the district.
Former Chief of Police William Devery hosts a water picnic for 15,000 to 20,000 women and children from the Ninth Assembly district. He leads a two steamers and four barges excursion, with nurses, entertainers, and a massive food supply list.
Chicago July 30 the Chicago board of trade faces a rare court action as Waite Thoburn Co secures a temporary restraining order blocking James Patten and associates from cornering July oats or pressuring margins. The ruling shocks traders and could force defaults on about 2 million bushels, with prices rising as deliveries falter.
Deputy Sheriff guards two non union workers when a mob attacks him and he is beaten near to death. The deputy and one man flee to a depot where they are rescued with difficulty. His brother dies while trying to reach him as he is clubbed on the way to the hospital. Two other policemen are beaten and one is reported near death.
In Shenandoah a mob of striking miners clashes with deputy sheriffs and police. A leading merchant Joseph Reddall dies after being beaten. More than 20 strikers, all foreigners, are shot by officers. Two borough policemen are fatally wounded and over a hundred shots fire scatter the mob. Police suffer injuries as crowds siege the station and railroad crossing. The chaos signals a continuing battle as authorities seek troops.
An elderly German rancher Amsee, living twelve miles north of Walkerville near Silver Bow and Jefferson counties, was sick after consuming loaves of bread and canned tomatoes found on the road. Authorities say the bread and tomato can were poisoned and are investigating the sale of the cans. Amsee wrote a dying note claiming poisoning and identified a suspect. neighbors helped drag him to safety after a long trek.
Thousands of Orthodox Jewish mourners filled York streets for the funeral of Chief Rabbi Jabs Joseph. A collision with police followed as processions passed synagogues and the Hoe factory on Grand Street. Water from windows, objects hurled, and arrests occurred. several injuries and hospitalizations were reported. Continued on page five.
