Shenandoah pa July 3 twelve hundred state troops encamped on a hill overlooking the town after a riot sparked by unemployed crowds. No violence since, crowds dwindled, authorities say martial law is not in effect. Troops will drill and focus on camp duties as miners push for withdrawal of forces.
Minneapolis mayor A A Ames announces resignation to avoid an earlier removal and the city to save on a special election. Col F P W Ames to resign as chief of police. Acting captain C R Hue and John Fitchette assist. Case recalls two months of police corruption probes and court actions.
In Butte, a voltage surge from the Butte Electric Light and Power system sparked multiple shocks and two deaths amid a storm yesterday morning. A Cudahy Packing Company refrigerated car worker, A. E. Rhodes, died after a heavy jolt from an uninsulated incandencent cord in the car. Several others suffered minor shocks or burns while turning on switches and handling wiring in warehouses across Front, Utah, and Aluminum streets. Coroner's inquest blamed insufficient insulation and questioned wiring practices at the refrigerator car and related facilities.
James M. Burlingame as Register and Charles H. Benton as Receiver will oversee the new district created by the Fifty Seventh Congress at its recently ended session. The office opens today and marks a reorganization of land management in the district.

Inspector Inch described porcelain tubes and exposed sockets in the warehouse wiring as noncompliant. He testified a transient of around 2100 volts could have caused the death, noting shocks to others on the same circuit but attributing the incident to wiring on the warehouse premises used by the Packie Company. The testimony references a defective setup and the week’s operations contributing to the fatal shock.
