Edward Smith known as Davis faced a preliminary trial before Justice Marsland in Walkerville on a charge of obtaining money by a worthless check. Bound over to district court on $500 bond, he admitted knowing the check was bad and offered to run away. The case stems from a $47.50 check passed at a Watson avenue saloon. $15 was advanced by Marcus Mantz on the forged instrument. He claimed to have received the check from another man and said he would plead guilty and go to the penitentiary. A $25 reward offered for proving Mayer’s mainspring claim is noted alongside a local advertisement for watch cleaning.
