Indianapolis July 19 The United Mine Workers convention adjourned after opposing a general strike and approving a plan to raise a relief fund for striking anthracite miners. The national treasurer would immediately allot 50 000 to district officers.
William Evans was shot twice by John M Geary and died at the hospital after the grievous assault. The city of Anaconda, stirred by the tragedy, mourns a mild citizen admired for peace and rectitude, with the killer jailed and awaiting further proceedings.
John McGeary a former Anaconda Copper worker at the Washoe smelting plant shot and fatally wounded William J. Evans Amalgamated Properties general superintendent of machinery near the Washoe office. McGeary fled toward the tracks but was intercepted by John O Mara who fired a rifle wounding him and leading to his surrender. Evans died at St Ann s hospital after a day of treatment.
Desperate pairs of highwaymen commit seven hold ups in five days in Butte. Victims include T. J. Redmond at Idaho Porphyry streets and L. C. Stevenson on South Excelsior, while John Malom loses 86 dollars and Brennan & Grant’s saloon is robbed of 40 dollars. Police fire shots but arrests elude them.
Bozeman July 19 The county commissioners received an opinion from Attorney General Donovan confirming County Attorney G D Peace that the county is liable for bridges and repairs crossing canals and irrigating ditches. The ruling saves taxpayers a few thousand dollars and ends the custom of owners building and the county repairing.
