A series of robberies in Butte occurred in a single night with three victims. One victim is identified by name, another did not provide a name, and the third fled after valuables were taken. Police are investigating and seeking leads.
Between 10 20 and 11 45 last night two well built men in dark clothes and slouch hats robbed three citizens of Butte at Idaho Porphyry Galena Renshaw Quartz Wyoming streets. Redmond lost a gold watch and 60 cents. Police fired four shots but yielded no arrest.
The Observator Romano reports that US Vatican talks on Philippine religious affairs have moved toward a joint accord. Secretary Root praised the Vatican’s approach and a Manila meeting will finalize four points. Taft plans a farewell audience with the pope on July 21 before a family trip to Vallaborosa.
London reports the pope is intensely displeased with the cardinals commission handling the friars negotiations with Judge Taft. The pope has annulled the cardinals procedure and signified willingness to meet Taft personally, deeming American demands reasonable.
Havre elects to grant the telephone franchise after a special council meeting. Work on water works and electric light plant begins immediately following the approval.
A Seattle dispatch reports the outlaw Tracy has disappeared from the Green River valley. Deputies and about 20 men await a tangible clue to his exact whereabouts near Sawyer Lake as Pierce County officials renew the chase after prior failures.
West side residents voted to join the city while east side voters overwhelmingly rejected annexation. The county held polls from 8 am to 6 pm with district results showing strong west side support and near unanimous east side opposition. The annexation debate cited sewer connections as a key issue.
Louis Ward, of Whatcom Washington, is accused of acting as a stool pigeon for Sheriff Cudihee and guiding him to a cabin by Sawyer Lake to trap a convict. Ward’s relatives deny reliability and suggest his plan stemmed from reading dime novels. They claim a wounded arm and staged bloody rags were used to mislead authorities.
Funeral services for Daly-West mine disaster victims were held in Park City Utah with services starting at 10 a.m. and continuing through the day. Flags fly at half mast, crepe decorates buildings as relatives gather. Coroner's jury offers no cause or blame verdict. The underground powder storage system is condemned and a law to end the practice recommended.
In Carbondale Illinois on July 18 the Jaubert brothers were shot to death by the wife of one man after a confrontation at their home. She fired three shots killing the husband and fatally wounding the brother who witnessed the attack. Coroner’s jury later exonerated the wife.
Lew Walker of Livingston and Robert T. Richardson of Kalispell have been appointed railway mail clerks. The announcement comes as part of the special dispatch from Washington dated July 18.

Indianapolis July 18 After a secret session the convention referred President Mitchells recommendations for the anthracite strike to a special committee of top officers and district presidents. The panel plans a weekly $1 assessment where a check officer exists and to use all funds for the strikers with the aim of avoiding a general walkout. Secretary Wilson announced a $500000 weekly need to support all strikers, with $250000 to come from the assessment and the rest from outside sources. The Colorado delegation will report a $50000 donation to the cause.
Spokane July 18. The Spokane county Republican convention backed John L. Wilson for the United States senate and instructed its delegation to support him until released. The Wilson forces held sway. a break occurred only when the convention endorsed Governor McBride’s rail policy proposing a three member railway commission to regulate rates and aid taxation. Governor McBride and Wilson spoke to the convention.
Helena July 18 report says about 250 men are employed at the East Helena smelter. No new workers will be taken on until additional furnaces are blown. Two furnaces are operating and a third is expected to start within a few days.
Ore is starting to arrive from mines halted by the strike and the plant is expected to operate again within two weeks. W. A. Price, longtime East Helena associate, will go to Salt Lake as manager, with Whitley named assistant manager.
Helena July 18. Speculation grows over how many men will be stationed at Fort Harrison. Ex Senator Power asked Adjutant General Corbin if a full quota would be sent. Corbin replied the post will be prepared for regimental headquarters four infantry companies and band.
Glendive authorities yesterday examined B. J. Holloway after his Monday disturbance. Doctors Hunt and Ireland and J. A. Morton concluded his actions stemmed from drink not mental illness and the insanity charge was dismissed.
