Merrill Killed by Tracy in Forest Duel, Outlaw Companion Found

The body of the companion of the much wanted outlaw Tracy is found with fatal wounds. The injuries support a reported duel in the depths of the forest and confirm the danger surrounding the fugitive.

A Chehalis report says the body of Dave Merrill, dead after a June 9 duel with Harry Tracy near Tumwater Canyon, was found by Mary Wagner and her son in Napavine. They will seek a $2750 reward. the scene included a bullet wound and spent 30-30 shells.

Body of Merrill Suspect Found Near Chehalis

Deputy Coroner H. L. Mead impaneled a jury and inspected a body dumped in the woods about a mile south of Chehalis. The corpse, badly damaged, was brought to town for identification amid assertions from Warden J. T. Jones and L. W. Studebaker, with bullets found in the body and items including a briar pipe, seven 30 caliber shells, and dented clothing.

Bodies of Merrill and Tracy Found After Oregon Duel

The body of Dave Merrill, an Oregon convict, was found near Chehalis five miles from town in a thicket close to the Lewis county poor farm. Mrs. Waggoner and her son spotted a shoe and unearthed a man wedged between two legs with head beneath. The coroner will hold an inquest. Merrill is identified by his brother Ben Merrill and Oregon Warden Jones.

Tragedy Over a Clearing Shot Ends in Death

In a clearing nine paces north Tracy found the first cartridge and Merrill lay dead ten paces south. Two more shots finished the deadly act, hitting Merrill in the back and neck. Tracy then moved the body, firing twice more, before burying it under brush beside an old cedar stump.

Kaichi Explodes Off Hsakuan Killing Many Sailors

Details from Chinese papers on the Kaichi disaster report a sudden explosion near Hsakuan during a salute to Atago. Estimates place deaths between 140 and 250, with only two survivors. The blast shook ships nearby and was felt as far as seven miles inland. Captain Lee and several officers were ashore at the time.

Missing Man Said to Be Dead

Special Dispatch reports from Billings that Abe Farwell, sought after in Helena by letter, is dead. Captain J. C. Bond recalls Farwell dying 11 or 12 years ago at his Carbon county ranch, now the Siles 1 brewery site. Farwell drank whiskey in Laurel, died the same night, and an inquest was held.

Tracy Sighted Near Enumclaw After Dinner Visit

A Seattle Post Intelligencer dispatch from Enumclaw Washington reports that Tracy dined Sunday with Morris Garner at the Gannon farm on Boise Creek three and a half miles southeast of Enumclaw. Garner says a masked man identified as Tracy entered the house, ordered the Garners to sit and be watched, shaved a Garne r, took trousers, and left with a gun glistening in the sun. Residents report distant smoke and a possible hiding camp east of town, shifting theories on Tracy’s route from Palmer toward Enumclaw. A railroad watchman near the White River bridge saw movement around noon.
