Washington July 14 Maj Gen Adna R Chaffee is relieved of the Philippines command and ordered to Governors Island New York to take command of the Department of the East per a Secretary of War order. He preferred New York if he must move and suggested Sept 30 as a possible change date.

Bozeman Mayor's Son Alward Injured in Accident

Special Dispatch reports Warder Alward son of W M Alward former Bozeman mayor suffered a painful accident in Bozeman on July 14. Police and local doctors attended him at the scene and he was transported for treatment. Further details were unavailable.

Frayed wagon accident injures man at Bridger hatchery

Friday afternoon in Bridger canyon a man and companions were returning poles to the United States hatchery when Warder jumped from a moving wagon and fell between the wheels. One wheel passed over his foot and grazed his head, causing severe bruising.

Senator Spooner of Wisconsin met President Roosevelt and Secretary Root at Sagamore Hill to discuss the purchase of the Panama Canal company property. Sugar rate case continuances delay interstate suits

In San Francisco on July 4 Judge Morrow ordered continuances until November in sugar rate cases. The Interstate Commerce Commission with U S Attorney Woodworth said more time is needed to collect evidence against Southern and Union Pacific railways. R L Shaver will join Woodworth in prosecution. Suits allege differential freight rates from Missouri river points to the Pacific coast, filed over a year ago.

Collision in Malacca Straits Sinks Teutonia and Junk

A nighttime collision on June 6 in the straits of Malacca between the Teutonia steamer and a Chinese junk sank both vessels. Out of 106 on board, only 68 were saved. octubre news dispatch via San Francisco dated July 14 reports the loss.

Two Nome passengers Masterson and Gillespie report the Portland towed the disabled Jeanie to Ladysmith while both steamers remained in hailing distance. A Grant's Pass blaze destroyed property valued near 50000 this afternoon. Insurance covers about two thirds. The fire began in the city hotel and a high wind spread flames across a wide area before they were controlled.

Four Men Rob Den Rio Grande Express Train at Miss Switch

Masked bandits held up the westbound Denver and Rio Grande passenger train near Miss Switch on Marshall Pass. They blew open two safes with dynamite, robbed about 60 passengers, and fled toward the hills. Engineer Perry Ruland was knocked unconscious. deputies pursued the gang as the train returned to Salida.

Santa Fe Plans Ocean Steamship Control

Topeka on July 14 reports the Atchison Topeka Santa Fe Railway seeks to gain control of Ocean Steamship Co, which runs ships from San Francisco to Hawaii Tahiti and Australian ports. Ocean Steamship is currently controlled by John D Spreckels and partners with $2.5 million capital stock and similar bonded amount.

Dent Resigns as Denver Referee in Bankruptcy Case

Sidney H. Dent sent his resignation as referee in bankruptcy for the Denver district of the circuit court to Judge Moses Hallett. Judge Hallett accepted and appointed ex-District Judge E.
