In Walla Walla Washington July 18 the Liberty Bell tour faced its first vandalism as boys along a highway near Pendleton Oregon threw rocks at the bell. One rock struck the bell but did not appear to damage it. Officials on the 2600 mile journey called it the first unpatriotic act of the trip.
Recruiting authorities in Birmingham have been directed by the War Office to invite men previously selected for army service for another medical examination. Lake View Oregon July 12 J B Auten a retired hardware man shot and instantly killed Ray Curtis then surrendered to authorities. Auten had followed the wife to Curtis' room where she sat on Curtis' lap and fired five Hi Caliber Colt revolver shots. All five took effect. Auten turned himself in and is held in Lake County Jail.
Juneau, Alaska July 18 Southeastern Alaska endures nearly a ten day heat spell with sun for about 20 hours daily and calm winds. Thermometer hits 90 in shade and 100 in Juneau business district. Forest fires rage along Lynn Canal as glaciers discharge ice at an extraordinary rate. Fruit and garden truck prosper unusually.
Roseburg Ore July 1 A Glendale merchant A H Hanson and his 11 year old daughter Es sie Hanson die after a tourist car attempting to pass on a narrow grade of the Pacific highway south of Canyonville left the road and plunged down an embankment. Marie Smith 11, who was also in the car, escaped with minor injuries. Hanson was seriously injured and may die.
In Los Angeles on July 18 the grand lodge of Elks opened its first business session with two tight contests. Edward Masters won grand trustee over Maj. B. Jeffery to succeed James R. Nicholson. Nicholson was chosen grand exalted ruler. Other officers were elected or re-elected, and Baltimore won the 1816 convention from Atlanta by 714 to 259. A parade of electrical floats and a day at Santa Monica followed, with committee reports to occupy the session.
Chicago July 13 The first of three local funeral services for Archbishop James E. Quigley who died in Rochester was held at Holy Name Cathedral. Dignitaries from across the United States and Mexico attended the Pontifical high mass. Bishop A J McGavick presided as Bishop Paul P Rhode preached. A solemn mass for children is planned for morning with services to follow Thursday. Columbus OH July 13 Three officials and an agent of Old Captain City Daily company found guilty of defrauding the government of revenue taxes on Oleomargarine amounting to 1 000 000 by a federal jury.
Militia companies were ordered prepared to deploy to the state prison farm at Milledgeville where Leo M. Frank serves a life term for the Mary Phagan murder after his death sentence was commuted. Authorities tightened guards and prepared for possible attempts to liberate him as reports spread.
London July 14 The German emperor according to the Times told bankers that the war would end in October after a deputation raised financial fears of continuing the campaign. He replied that even with an immediate end on indemnity Germany would face difficulty, but prolongation could bankrupt the empire.
Washington July 18 Dr Joseph Holmes director of the federal bureau of mines at Washington died early today in Denver He was regarded by colleagues as the father of the bureau for turning education and experiment into a safety drive and making safety first a national movement His death is seen as a loss to the government’s efforts to reduce mine fatalities and promote safe industrial practice across the United States.
Washington on July 1 Postmaster General Burleson ordered parcel post shipments to use a combined length and girth of four inches, enabling standard fruit and berry crates to be mailed. The prior limit was seventy two inches. In Fairbanks Alaska on July 13 the eight hour law forced suspension of placer gold mining operations in the district for a week with a few reopening at a daily wage plus board.
