He also warned against riding neutral ships carrying ammunition and urged avoiding passages that could pull the United States into war.
London reports the German cruiser Koenigsberg has been totally wrecked by British river monitors in German East Africa. Four British sailors were killed and six wounded. New Orleans July 12 Captain of Baron Napier reports no bombs aboard after a local letter warned of danger. Howthhead, also named, had no wireless gear to receive the warnings and may have been hailed by a coastwise vessel. Howthhead sailed July 9 for Dublin and Belfast via Norfolk with general cargo. Baron Napier carries mules for the British army and sailed for Avonmouth.
German forces launched a surprise attack on a key French defensive position near Soucheser, advancing without warning and pressing the line. Allied troops responded as reinforcements moved to stabilize the sector and assess the impact on ongoing operations.
London July 12—In a sudden shift from a lull on the west front, German forces resume hard fighting as the aggressor and victor. The Souchez cemetery area north of Arras sees bitter action with gas attacks and hand to hand combat over ground near Souches. French losses acknowledged as they strive to recapture gains near Lens.
