Letter Writer Still At Large

The writer of anonymous letters to Andy Mandoli and Max Hammerslough demanding $500 near Warm Springs creek remains unknown. Sheriff and police efforts fail. Ricardo Messassi, an Italian laborer, was arrested near the money site and held on suspicion of mental imbalance, a claim Mandoli disputes as unfounded.

First Lady Possibility On Suspect Messassi

An official says Messassi’s arrest stemmed from circumstances. He speaks little English after 12 years in America, worked in timber camps and road projects, and was recently ill from excessive water intake. He was seized near the creek while returning to the city on Thursday during a tense letter threat investigation and was jailed.
