Best aged 48 died at his home 3160 West Silver Street Butte from congestion of the lungs after a 10 day illness His family includes a wife and two sons aged 17 and 18 The sons attend Notre Dame School Best came to Butte from Milwaukee ten years ago He was secretary treasurer and one tenth stock holder of the Centennial Brewing Co He was active with Henry Mueller in breweries at Billings and Anaconda and had links to the Philip Best brewery in Milwaukee Arrangements were made to ship the body to Milwaukee on the Northern Pacific train
Helena January 29 A Helena meeting of the Montana Fish and Game Protective Association adopts resolutions criticizing State Game Warden W F Scott for alleged neglect of duties. The group cites gaps in deputy wardens across Yellowstone Carbon and Custer counties and accuses the warden of concentrating on certain districts. The association asks Governor Toole to consider changes to ensure efficient enforcement of fish and game laws. Scott travels to Anaconda and says he welcomes full investigation.
The State Bank of B linge receives authorization from State Auditor Caldernean to commence operations after incorporation. The Jefferson Valley Trading Company filed in the secretary of State's office with paid up capital of $66,500 and existing indebtedness of $9,117.74.
Dr A D McDonald a pension examining surgeon based in Kalispell has been appointed to the post by authorities in Washington. The appointment formalizes medical oversight for eligible pension claims and signals continued administrative attention to veteran benefits.

John MacGinnis and others appealed to the circuit court of appeals from Judge Knowles ruling dissolving an injunction that would have prevented the Boston and Montana from paying dividends. The case centers on actions by the general court against the railroad company.
Albert D. J. Gennesse, arrested two weeks earlier for forging a $2 check on Dennis O Shea, pleaded guilty in district court. Judge Smith sentenced him to one year in the penitentiary and indicated possible transfer to an asylum if needed. He has prior stays in Deer Lodge and an insane asylum.
Kansas City reports General Frederick Funston, back from San Francisco, spent an hour with his physician for wound treatment. The physician noted that if the wound heals with care, a formal operation might not be needed. An adjourned trustees meeting in Washington approved Andrew Carnegie's gift to found a national research institution. The deed funds a Washington university vision, now aimed at broad cooperation with existing colleges, honoring Washington while expanding study. W. E. Dodge joins the board. D. C. Gilman is named president.
Great Falls reports say a cold snap lowers Missouri River flow causing water shortages at the smelter. Concentrator shut, power cut, only three blast furnaces and a few McDougalls running. Montana Central sent a tank train to Stockett to deliver water to the coal town.
Spokane reports recount Sherman Nelson, a carnival hypnotist now jailed, who supposedly hypnotized inmate Hans Younger in a case that baffled physicians. Doctors note the patient remains under influence, with release dependent on the original hypnotist.
Kia Curry's trial in two felonious assault and battery cases is scheduled for February 3 by the criminal court in session Knoxville. The prosecution halted a prior agreement to move to federal court, and the trial depends on whether the injured policemen can attend. Curry has not been indicted by the grand jury on the charge of bringing stolen goods into the state.
The Washington Mon company of Spokane has completed the largest timber land deal by a local firm in Eastern Washington. It purchased 11 000 acres from the Northern Pacific railroad near Milan along the Spokane river, adding to about 200 acres already held nearby. Investment is around 75000 and the tract is expected to hold no less than 150 000 000 feet of lumber.
A fragment from a Caledonia region notice in Saratoga County New York reports a death by self harm with unclear date in January. The brief item names no individuals or institutions beyond the locality.
Supreme Court in Helena orders that the Montana Ore Purchasing company may not withdraw the $350,000 cash deposited to back a Delaware Surety bond unless two or more satisfactory sureties are provided. The court notes the underlying action has not been finally decided in the defendants' favor and requires an approved bond with two or more sureties before any withdrawal.
Mitchell, a longtime local figure, killed himself today at the door of State Senator Brackett’s office. He was the fifth family member to die by self harm and was believed to have suffered long-term mental instability.

In a January slip at the Illinois Bell plant in South Chicago one man was killed and four others were severely injured, with Michael O Branski named dead and John Polackowich among the injured expected to die. Cold weather is blamed as the cause after molten iron blocked at the blast furnace top and a vent opened, sending hot metal over workers. Polackowich fled toward the lake before being overtaken and rushed to the company hospital.
An explosion of dynamite at the Marsh colliery in Thorn burn Halifax N S killed three men. The dead are J. W. Sutherland resident manager Walter Sutherland underground foreman and Joan Wilkes overground foreman.
Fire destroyed the Peoples church in St Paul at Pleasant avenue. The 2300 seat auditorium kindergarten and school buildings were burned. James J Hill's mansion on Summit avenue backs the site but was not damaged. Dr. G S Smith pastor had his private library lost in the blaze.
Seattle dispatch reports Horace Tuffin, a mail carrier on the Eagle City to Valdes route, froze to death while delivering mail in extreme cold. His team and dogs were abandoned after failure to start a fire as a storm raged. Tuffin, from Venora Iowa, sought funds for his widowed mother and sisters. John E B Killet died near Copper Center after camping on the Chestochina river. suspected to have fallen through ice and frozen.
Mary Constance BenUvoglio mother superior and founder of the Poor Sisters in the United States died in Omaha after a short illness of pneumonia. She was born in Rome Italy where her father held a governing position.
