The Montana senate backed six administration revenue and taxation measures pushing licenses on cement, plaster, kerosene, autos, and coal mines while approving two highway bills to fund county road maintenance and city road upkeep. House apportionment debates sparked opposition. a substitute motion was adopted as the fight began.
The European Relief Committee distributed 60 thousand dollars of its thirty three million total to the Treasury State for child aid programs.
Montana's quota for Herbert Hoover's European relief fund is set at 60000 dollars with a February 15 deadline. State headquarters in Bozeman reports $18000 raised so far, about one third of the target, under R B Bowden. Alfred Atkinson is Montana chairman as the European relief council expands to include eight welfare groups aiding 3.5 million Central European children.
About $1000 has been raised locally for starved European children. The Hoover plan offers one meal daily for one hungry child through winter until harvest. Austria and other nations report terrible conditions with malnourished infants and widespread disease due to lack of food. Over 3,000,000 Central European children depend on Hoover European relief imports for survival.
Jan 26 New York The Rev Dr William T Manning rector of Trinity parish long reputed wealthiest in the country was elected bishop of the Protestant Episcopal diocese of New York in a highly eventful convention noted as one of the most exciting in church history.
Paul McCormick known as the grand old man of Montana died at his Billings home just after dawn at age 75 from heart disease and old age weakness. Born in Steuben County New York June 14 1845 he came to Montana in 1866 joining early expeditions against hostile Indians and later built a ranching and mercantile business career culminating in ranch management near Billings. He leaves wife Helena whom he wed in 1877 and sons Paul McCormick Jr J McCormick of California Robe and Frank A McCormick of Billings along with brothers J McCormick. Funeral set for Saturday morning.
Montana passenger fares will rise from 3 to 3.6 cents to align with interstate rates after a 30 day notice period. Tariffs must be filed with the Interstate Commerce Commission. if filed today, new rates could take effect February 27, with a Montana ruling pending Supreme Court action on similar cases. Police report from Denver cites a seizure near prohibition HQ as agents arrest Irvin Mueller and Guy Kitt for illicit liquor.
A man died this morning in a local rooming house from a self inflicted gunshot. Authorities say his health issues are believed to have led to the act.
Fort William Ontario January 26 Richard Kempton a Canadian veteran hospitalized for frozen feet offered to donate blood to Mike Venoski an Austrian enemy during the World War after several of Venoski’s countrymen refused the life saving transfusion keeping the wartime tale of reconciliation alive in a local hospital scene.
Dr. D. J. Donahue of Butte states the Montana board of health plans to back a Louisiana style program, known as the New Orleans plan, once legislative committee drafts a satisfactory measure. He praises Louisiana’s success, criticizes New York’s punitive approach, and argues treating addicts as patients reduces fear and improves outcomes.
The Silver Bow County Teachers Association meeting concluded there is no question about teachers loyalty in Montana schools. If a loyalty oath is needed, they will not oppose it. The group also noted property taxes are near a limit and endorsed a more equitable income tax proposed in the legislative taxation program. Members include Rh. E. Minkin as chairman and others.
Helena January 26 five revenue and taxation measures were sent to the Montana House by the committee. They impose license taxes on metal mines coal producers plaster cement gypsum auto owners and oil producers with deductions limited and exemptions narrow. The largest impact targets net revenue based license fees and affects operators with smelters mills and reduction works more than those without such facilities.
A jury found in favor in a damage suit by a tenant against a lodging house operator. The jury credited the claim that insufficient heat was provided, noting $20.85 paid for extra heating equipment and the remaining amount reflecting rental value loss for four months due to the heater deficit. Wilmer testified he was forced to buy the equipment.

Livingston January 26 A district court information charges Dr H J Devney with involuntary manslaughter after a bench warrant arrest. The complaint alleges Devneys gross negligence caused the death of Miss Myria Porter of Butte when his car struck a bridge and wrecked near the city early Sunday morning.
Tokyo reports Minister of War Tanaka told the Diet the Langdon incident between American and Japanese nationals in Vladivostok was regrettable. A Japanese court martial investigates who fired first, with signs pointing to the sentry’s initiative, and whether the act warranted such a serious measure. The war minister stressed good faith in the inquiry and noted the broader aim of closer U S Japan understanding. Chief Justice White returns to the bench in Washington after weeks away.
Engineers from Brazil inspected the Milwaukee and Butte, Anaconda Pacific line electrification. Brazil plans to spend 45 000 contos of 827 570 000 on electrifying the Central Railroad of Brazil, following a commission recommendation. General Electric says orders from Brazil total 15 000 000 to 20 000 000, with Guy Bellows supervising installation in Brazil after overseeing Milwaukee work. The price barrier makes rail electrification scarce outside the United States and Britain.
