Taft outlines Panama Canal plan to Senate panel
Secretary Taft told the Senate Committee on inter-oceanic canals of projected completion within six years from July and an estimated total cost around 300 million dollars. He detailed lock widening to 110 feet, labor costs, water works, sanitation, and Panamanian land use, urging no wage cuts for skilled workers and noting possible government steamship involvement on the Pacific. He favored a legation site in Panama and a future zone government plan, while ruling out a rapid full land sale by Panama Railroad assets.
