Federal narcotics raids arrest nine in Butte sweep

A 14 officer federal narcotics team raided three Butte locations before 2 am arresting nine men including white, Chinese, and a negro. Names listed include Jew Joe, Frank Rivet, William Madden, H Morse, Pete Cochrane, W Chung, Hum Lee, Wes Maloney and Laurence Quan. Several face drug selling charges as raids continue.

Grazing Fees Hiked on National Forest Ranges

The Department of Agriculture announced a 50 percent rise in grazing fees for national forest ranges. A quarter of the increase took effect January 1, 1928, with equal annual increments through 1931. Dan Casement, an appointed appraiser, helped set the new rates. Average fees will be 15.1 cents for cattle and 4.6 cents for sheep.

Heroic Fire Rescue Saves Trevanic Family From Burning Home

Joe Halloran of Halloran & Bennett Motor Co. braved smoke and collapsing walls to rescue Mr. and Mrs. J. Trevanic and their eight year old daughter Ethel from their Harvard Street residence before it burned to the ground. Neighbors aided as the house collapsed after the fire was detected around 2 am. The Trevanics were taken to a nearby location for medical attention.

Meningitis situation not alarming say physicians

Rumors of an epidemic in Butte and Silver Bow county were denied by health officials. There are five current cases with 17 since January and a total of ten city and seven county cases, with deaths six and four respectively. authorities saw no need to close schools and city physician Dr Joe Kane checked local schools and found health conditions very good.

Senate urged to vote against third term idea

Washington Feb 17 The senate debated a resolution by Senator La Follette to record the chamber against more than two terms for a president. He said the move aimed to thwart a Coolidge renomination amid party forces drafting the president. Administration forces led by Senator Bingham resisted as a political gesture to block renomination.

One Hundred Four-Year-Old Man Drives Into Canal

Calexico, Feb. 7. Harry Bush celebrated his 104th birthday by driving his car into an irrigation canal and escaped injury. Before the judge he quipped that the first 100 years are the hardest. After a small fine from a roll of over $1,000 he was allowed to go on his way.

Governor Rejects Removal Call For State Industrial Board Chief

Governor J W Erickson told Butte lawyers he cannot remove J Burke Clements chair of the industrial accident board, urging amendment of the law instead. He said board discretion in settlements is legislative, not executive, and noted lump sum policy favors injured workers but can benefit lawyers too. The Silver Bow Bar urged Clements' resignation after two hours of argument.

Haig Laid To Rest Beside Sir Walter Scott In Dryburgh

Beloved servants laid Field Marshal Earl Haig to rest at Dryburgh Abbey in Edinburgh Scotland after a solemn funeral procession from St Boswells. Thousands watched as the coffin draped in the Union Jack traveled five miles on a farm cart drawn by a single horse. Pallbearers were Haig estate workers gamekeeper butler gardeners and grooms. Pan American delegates push canal defense at conference

The Panama Canal drew the greatest international focus at the Pan American conference. Ambassador Henry P. Fletcher urged that the United States’ core interest is protecting the canal as a vital maritime artery. Rebels Die In Train Raid As Fire Rages

Reports from Mexico City detail a raid between Guadalajara and Manzanillo on Sunday. Fourteen Mexican rebels were killed and fourteen captured and executed, while five federal soldiers were severely wounded as a train car was blown up. Federal planes then bombed the attackers, who dispersed.

Butte to Host Montana High School Basketball Championship

The annual Montana high school basketball tournament will be moved from Bozeman to Butte for one year. Games run March 7 to 10 in the Montana School of Mines gym with R B Bowden leading planning efforts. Next year the event returns to Bozeman under State College auspices.

Impressive memorial held by Butte Knights council

Memorial services for 13 Butte Knights of Columbus council No 668 members who died in the past year were held at the lodge rooms on West Park street.
