Stewart reports a nationally known group of hardware men gathers in Butte for the annual Montana Association convention as District Attorney Gordon readies to present the oil man's case to jurors this week.
Dispatches from Canton report 270 of 2,000 arrested in recent days executed. About 600 arrested in Canton, with those executed chosen from that group. The actions follow General Li Chai Sum’s crackdown after a communist coup six weeks prior, which cost around 5,000 communist and nationalist lives.
Two air mail letters will race around the world in opposite directions, mailed from Seattle on Feb 17. The race, organized by the Post-Intelligencer with assist from the Post Office, aims to set a new globe circumnavigation record. The eastbound letter runs by train to Pasco then by air, while the westbound goes to Victoria and proceeds to the Orient by ship.
The body of an obscure Revolutionary War soldier will be enshrined in Alexandria Virginia on February 22 as the Unknown Soldier of the Revolution. Found during church site excavations the remains were re interred and a service arranged by the Alexandria post of the American Legion for posterity on Washingtons birthday.
New York report states the Statue of Liberty in New York harbor is to be cleaned after 42 years of exposure to smoke from steamers. Colonel Alexander Williams leads plans using a special soap to remove dirt without altering the bronze patina. The statue, designed by Frederic Auguste Bartholdi, was unveiled October 28, 1886.
Three members of the Stanchik family are dead and the remaining three, including the father William, are in serious or critical condition after carbon monoxide fumes from a water heater. The victims include mother Anna Stanchik aged 38 and children Anna 11 and Eddie 5.
S W Cutlip a Democrat running for the school board in Diana West Virginia proposes hiring rules requiring teachers to buckle galoshes and ensure skirts meet a nine inch ground clearance. The platform also states he would not hire any teacher who refuses to buckle galoshes or whose skirts do not meet the length standard.
Paris reports the French government and Bank of France have built up about 1.25 billion dollars in foreign exchanges and balances to back the franc. The plan uses 8 billion francs in new notes, 6 billion for debt reduction, and deposits from banks, with treasury interest on deposits attracting funds despite low rates.
In a case tied to the Teapot Dome inquiry, Chicago oil executive Robert W. Stewart refuses to answer questions before the senate oil committee. District Attorney Gordon plans a grand jury presentment in Washington to seek contempt of the senate, separate from ongoing habeas corpus proceedings over a temporary arrest.
Washington February 5 The senate plans to push investigations this week while the House continues its steady agenda with two more appropriation measures. The week’s program includes action on the War Department appropriation bill and related funding measures.
Marine corps units were rushed to Matagalpa after reports that rebel leader Augusto Sandino was seen nearby with armed followers. The move aims to counter Sandino in the Nueva Segovia area while Vega arrives with supplies and extra officers for the forces operating from Corinto and surrounding postings.
Paul Diebel a Silesian miner famed for crucifixion simulations was barred from performing in Vienna for refusing a free police demonstration. Diebel said he would perform for law enforcement only if paid. Earlier in Munich he remained nailed to a cross for hours while smoking and joking with spectators.
Los Angeles February 5 special precautions guarded William Edward Hickman confessed kidnapper and slayer and Dale Budlong a fellow prisoner whose revelation of a sensational letter from the self-styled Fox brought prominence in the present sanity trial. Tirades against Budlong reported on page two col four.
The three day state convention is set to attract the largest gathering in state history with delegates from nearly all Montana cities and nearby states. Mayor M Kerr Beadle is scheduled to welcome attendees this morning as part of the opening ceremonies.

Evening events at 9 in Winter Garden ballroom hosted by the Butte Exchange Club.
Nationally known hard wage businessmen and top dealers from Montana and nearby states gather in Butte for the Montana Implement and Hardware association twenty year convention. Delegates from leading firms plan three days of meetings at the New Finlen ending with a banquet Wednesday night.
Ten fishermen are feared lost after a large ice floe broke away southwest of Windmill Point, Ontario. The Buffalo coast guard, led by Capt Paul Forner, plans a dawn tug and a small launch mission from Buffalo and Niagara on the Lake to search the open water for the stranded men. Canadian and American residents alerted authorities after seeing fishing parties and the moving ice.
A faded bottle message washed ashore near the Elizabeth River hinting at a sea disaster. The four pages mention a sinking ship possibly named May or Mary, a Norfolk lawyer, a $25,000 value, and a captain who writes that he has gone down with his crew.
Senator Nye condemns the $740 million naval buildup and U S marines in Nicaragua. He urges defense only and greater national guard strength, arguing the need in Pennsylvania to insure fair elections. He questions Nicaragua election fairness and cites Pennsylvania as having had an unfair election recently.
