News of the Southern Italy earthquake spurs extensive Italian community activity in New York with subscriptions opened by the Italian consul general, the Italian chamber of commerce led by Luigi Solari, and local newspapers urging contributions to the Red Cross. Other cities join relief efforts and public officials announce plans to aid victims.
Eye witnesses describe a huge quake that struck Messina causing widespread destruction. Buildings toppled as aftershocks rattled streets, with residents scrambling for safety and authorities beginning assessment and rescue efforts.
Catania reports flood of refugees arriving by train and steamer, half naked and traumatized after Messina’s devastation. Eyewitness accounts describe collapsed buildings, tidal waves, widespread corpses, and scenes of horror as survivors seek aid amid ruin.

Baltimore December 29. Dr Harry Fielding Reid of Johns Hopkins University and a leading US authority on seismic disturbances attributes the Southern Italy earthquake to a general dropping or sinking of the earth in that locality.
Dispatch from Stuart Lupton to the state department says Arthur S. Cheney American consul at Messina and his wife are dead. Consul Gale notes Lupton escaped as a British warship aids rescue. Cheney, from Illinois, appointed 1907, and Lupton from Tennessee recently arrived.
Montelone Calabria Dec 29 A devastating tidal wave virtually destroys the town of Palmi with about 1 000 dead and unknown injuries. Bagniara suffers heavy casualties as the flood inundates a villa at Sangiovanni 2 500 feet inland. Palmi population about 10 000 and Bagniara 7 500.
Malta December 25. The battleship Exmouth and cruisers Euryalus and Minerva under Admiral Sir Asheton Curzon-Howe departed for Messina to aid disaster survivors. The cruiser Sutlej, en route to Malta, was intercepted by wireless and diverted back to Messina.
Island of Sicily and Calabria regions in Southern Italy report a vast death toll from a disaster. Messina and Reggio are listed with the highest losses, with estimates ranging widely from thousands to tens of thousands.
President Roosevelt, via the state department, expressed deep sympathy to King Victor Emmanuel of Italy for the Southern Italy and Sicily earthquake. The Red Cross appeals for funds were noted, with $2,000 in reserve, and no American ships near the region. The text of Roosevelt’s message and Red Cross communications are outlined.
A vast earthquake devastates Calabria and Messina with thousands killed or wounded. Survivors flee, ships and hospitals rush aid from Britain France and Russia, while Rome and other cities mobilize funds and relief efforts. Continues on Page Eleven.

Meager reports say 40 to 60 men were trapped at Lick Branch coal mine on the Pocahontas division of the Norfolk and Western. At 10 PM 14 men were recovered with four dead. about 50 miners were at work when the explosion occurred. Rescue efforts continue as damage to the mine is described as great.
