Pioneer members recount early days at a meeting in Millangs Pleasant Bowt and discuss pay and know how within the Montana association.
An enthusiastic gathering at Odd Fellows hall marks the fourth annual Eastern Montana members meeting. Speakers recall early trails, buffalo, and Indians, with reminiscences from Decker and Frith about pioneers, railroads, and the region’s formation.
Testimony from multiple witnesses described threats and the shooting near a yacht club after a boat race. William J. Aw’s murder is tied to Thornton J. Haine, with accounts of a revolver, a confrontation aboard a pier, and declarations of a police matter from Captain Haines and his brother.
Miss Ane Peck of Providence Rhode Island arrived in New York after a perilous ascent of Mt Huascaran in Peru and Xenadorea with two Swiss guides. She credited the guides for the climb to 24000 feet and recalled a near fatal fall when a guide slipped, the rope taut, and both were saved by the other guide who urged them to dig footholds for a rescue.
Caracas reports the end of Cipriano Castro's regime in Venezuela as a new, pro gressive ministry under Juan Vicente Gomez takes power. Castro faces conspiracy charges, trust erodes after a failed assassination plot, and Gomez arrests key conspirators while pledging to settle disputes with foreign powers and withdraw Dutch warships after a December surge of anti Castro sentiment.
New York December 22 fire swept Herald Square theater at Thirty-fifth Street and Broadway during The Three Twins. Fire damaged the building and forced chorus and actors into the street in their scant costumes. No panic occurred as musicians and police assisted. Damage estimated at 3500.
Readable portions recount the discovery near Sun River of a charred house and the body of Sam Leland a sheepherder amid an inquiry into a murder and arson. Tom Carr and others were arrested or questioned as investigators linked the case to violence by masked riders in the Sun River area.
Topeka Dec 22 Governor Hoch pardoned John Collins who is serving a re sentence for patricide in the Kansas state penitentiary. The murder of his father Joseph Collins a well to do real estate and insurance man in May 1898. Collins will be freed on Christmas day. Hoch calls the case remarkable and notes Collins was convicted largely on circumstantial testimony from three men in Broke all of AL. The trial hinged on a love motive involving Miss Frances Babcock of Lawrence and an alleged life insurance plan.
