Munroe a Hero Disgruntles Jeffries Over Four Round Bout
Miner Jack Munroe, who lasted four rounds with James J. Jeffries at the Broadway theater, wins Butte idol status while Jeffries blasts hero worship as undeserved. Jeffries says he let Munroe survive to please the crowd and to avoid disappointing spectators, and he taunts Munroe as a poor fighter. Munroe, shy and modest, says he fought beyond expectations and plans to return to mining unless offered money for boxing. He was born in Chester PA in 187? and now works at the Anaconda mine in Butte, living at the Florence hotel.
