Vanderbilt in critical condition improves slowly

New York reports Cornelius Vanderbilt remains very ill with peritonitis though improving. Dr. Flint notes he is easier and in a favorable tone. Delafield says the patient is still critically ill for a week, but peritonitis is gone and recovery is anticipated. Temperature around 100 six degrees.

Kid McCoy Held on Grand Larceny Charge in New York

New York police issued a warrant for pugilist Norman Selby known as Kid McCoy on a grand larceny charge. Roosevelt declines to act as arbitrator in Venezuelan dispute

Washington Dec 22 Roosevelt has not accepted the position of arbitrator in the Venezuelan controversy. European powers intimated they desire him to undertake arbitration, but the president believes matters should go to The Hague tribunal. Nineteen men from two coal schooners, the Frank A. Palmer and Louise B. Crary, were rescued by the Manhasset after a three day drift 45 miles off Highland Light. Six died in the sinking, four perished in the bay, and one jumped overboard. Survivors include Captains Potter and Rawding, engineers Stein and Lam, and others from Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the United States.
