Mayor Proposes Financial Probe of Butte Sprinkling Fund

The city of Butte faces a financial review after a report by the city clerk showing a year of spending on sprinkling that totals $21,217.20 in the previous administration and $17,063.49 in eight months of the current year. The total for the year ending April 20, 1909, is projected at $18,812.9, a reduction of $5,389.65 from the prior year, despite more streets being sprinkled. The mayor urges a citizen commission to examine all funds for fair and honest administration and to inform residents of the city’s financial condition and management. The report notes irregularities in charging wages to the sprinkling fund and argues taxes, whether general or sprinkling, support the same public services. A commission of five to seven representatives would review finances and advise on city conduct. The mayor insists citizens deserve transparency and accountability.
