They Bolted Convention and Shaped a Nation’s Course
A Rochester Herald summary recalls the 1848 Baltimore Democratic Convention split led by New York barnburners and old bunkers over the Wilmot Proviso and slavery. The protest signed by 38 New York delegates, including James C. Smith, helped polarize state politics and foreshadow later party realignments and Lincoln’s rise.

Rum Was Their Undoing in Early Slave Trade Analysis
The extract cites Pearson's Weekly with James Metcalfe arguing that Christian sympathy helped seed African slavery. It notes Spanish and Portuguese conquest linked religion with conquest, as natives resisted only by labor, leading slavers to use African captives due to coastward accessibility and simple defenses by interior peoples.
