Reports indicate hundreds dying daily as cholera spreads from Java to Japan. Cities along the coast and inland areas are affected in an alarming epidemic across Asiatic countries.
Aug. 27 report from Victoria B C describes a wide cholera outbreak from Java to Japan, with thousands of cases and many deaths inside and outside city walls. Dispatches cite hundreds of deaths in Java, patient counts in Hong Kong, Okayama Osaka and Nagoya, and a Manila wedding ending in cholera death.
In San Francisco a watchman fired on two New York tourists Rogers and Hafner in a box car at the Santa Fe yards. Rogers was killed, Hafner beaten and bruised, with Hafner claiming he and Rogers were awakened by a blow before fleeing. The incident followed warnings to stay off the property and has the town abuzz as authorities investigate.
Cameron Lumber company mills at Prison Idaho were burned this afternoon destroying nearly 3000 feet of high grade lumber. Estimated loss runs between 80 000 and 90 000 dollars with only about 20 000 insured. Strong west wind endangered nearby structures briefly as a bucket brigade including women and children fought the fire.
Justice Shiras arrived in Pittsburg and declined to confirm retirement news. He urged arbitration as the logical solution to the anthracite coal strike and called for incorporation of labor unions as a step toward national arbitration law. He said enforcement details belong to lawmakers and that unions must honor any agreement.
Tamaqua Pa August 27. Trolley line from Tamaqua to Summit Hill was cut and wires chopped by an unresting mob to hinder troop movement from Manila Park. Major Gearhardt used two soldier companies to Summit Hill ahead of time. Crowds hooted troops in Lansford Summit Hill and Coal Dale. In Lansford women joined the jeering guards. Soldiers forced mob from tracks in Coaldale. Situation described as serious by Major Gearhardt.
Special Dispatch to the Standard from Fort Benton reports the republican county convention date changed from September 22 to September 16. The meeting location remains Harlem as initially decided.
Harry S. Tuttle and Miss Christine Olsen married at 9 pm in the Butte hotel apartments attended by close friends. Rev. Blackiston officiated. The couple left by midnight eastbound for a short visit in the East. Tuttle, a longtime jeweler in Butte, heads his own firm. Olsen, noted as one of Butte’s most beautiful young ladies, has served as cashier at the Butte cafe for three years and earned strong regard from patrons and employers.
The president expresses pleasure upon reuniting with longtime associate Bill Sewele, highlighting warmth and cordial remarks during the encounter.
President arrives in Augusta and tours Bangor and Waterville on a Maine trip. He greets old hunter Bill Sewell of Island Falls and recalls muskrat meals from earlier Maine hunts. Crowds fill fairgrounds as he cautions safety for women and children.
Dense crowd hears the president say he faced both ways but would on this occasion. He dined at Senator Hale's home, traveled from Bangor, then delivered a short address at a nearby platform before departing at 10 for Nashua and other stops in New Hampshire tomorrow.

A dispatch from Dominica dated August 26 reports Mont Pelee violently erupting since 2 p m with prolonged noises heard from the southward. Cable communication with Martinique is reportedly down as the French line lacks a working cable to the point and officials cannot say when contact will be restored.
In Oakland California P E Barker a San Francisco man shot Mrs M J Moss in her Plater block apartments then killed himself Barker was jealous of her Mrs Moss was wounded above the left breast but expected to live Barker fired a shot into his mouth as policeman Sill arrived finding him dead in the stairway with Mrs Moss alive although injured
Rev W W Van Orsdel urged a Montana national park at the Bear Paws battlefield near Great Falls. Senator Paris Gibson pushed the proposal to Washington, where General Miles sent Col Mays to inspect graves. An Aug 22 Interior order withdraws the land from settlement pending congressional action while most of the battlefield area is included.
At a Livingston convention the Trades and Labor Council declared in favor of woman suffrage, urged state smelter and wage collection legislation, and pledged aid to striking anthracite coal miners.
The Montana Trades and Labor council considered proposed wage and labor reforms, approved sympathy for East coal miners, and urged woman suffrage and state printing preference for local firms. They clarified their stance on socialism and planned officer elections and a next meeting venue. Bridget McMahon received a gold watch as the lone woman delegate.
A speaker advocates Congress creating a national park at the battle site and an appropriation for a monument to 25 victims. Until recently few knew the bodies lay in unmarked graves, previously thought reinterred at Fort Custer or Fort Keogh.
A Cape Haytien dispatch reports General Nord’s troops defeated and forced to retreat from Limbe while fighting continues. Aux Cayes and Aquina residents rise against the provisional government as General Simon advances toward Moragoune. General Salaxe’s Firminite forces repulse Nord and take control of the Limbe district.
The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Fair were removed from the Church of the Madeleine in Paris at 9 o'clock after an automobile accident on August 14.
A quiet service was held with about twelve attendees. A cross and white wreath adorned the coffins before removal. Coffins left in two undertaker vans, one departing immediately, the other five minutes later, to the Western road freight station for packing cases. Shipment port and steamer remain undisclosed, manager Ellis declining to name details.
The sheep herder who died at St. Clare's hospital was identified as Freeman of Minnesota by State Superintendent Freeman’s brother. He visited Fort Benton weeks earlier, stayed at the Pacific hotel, claimed to be a carpenter, then worked on a sheep ranch before falling ill and dying. hotel staff learned his identity and notified his East relatives.
Chairman J C Auliden of the state central committee issues a call for a Republican meeting at the Granden hotel Helena at 2 pm September 3. The notice specifies the gathering of the committee in this city on that date and time.
