Mrs Myrtle L Mellus a 41 year old wealthy social figure was found murdered in her Los Angeles residence. Suspect Pat Kelly 38 was discovered hiding in a closet and captured after a failed escape attempt as officers swarmed the scene. Her husband Frank Mellus reported the body.
Factions backing and opposing Governor Alfred E Smith split the three largest Texas counties, with credentials committees set to decide at the state convention. Dallas Harris and Tarrant named rival delegations over endorsement versus following individual conscience in voting. A fist fight in Houston and tense exchanges marked Dallas Fort Worth and Houston gatherings.
Russell Kolemaine, 16, was arrested after a car struck Matt Daioma. The report notes the youths claimed to be in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
Police and sheriff's officers identified two victims from Saturday night crashes in Butte. Matt Luoma, 55, miner of 340 East Granite, died after being struck at East Broadway and Covert streets. William J. Crawford, 603 South Jackson, died after a separate hit at Porphyry and Montana Streets. Russell Relmaine, 16, was taken into custody as the driver of the car involved in Luoma's death, following statements from four local boys. Edward McGurk, of the Apex hotel, faced reckless driving charges and posted bond. Authorities investigated initial reports of a blue sedan fleeing the scene and a stolen car matching a suspect vehicle.
Los Angeles police linked Russell St. Clair Beitzel to the Barbara Mauger case after a taxicab driver, B. T. Redell, said a man matching Beitzel asked to go to the mountains to inspect a so called liquor plant. The man returned without a package smelling of creosote and said authorities had found the plant.
Violent thunderstorms followed a four day heat wave with high winds hail and rain. New York endured 94 degree heat and one death four prostrations. A Salvation Army captain Paul Rader was killed by lightning at Sharon Massachusetts while aiding bathers. Two bathers drowned near Boston and property damage was reported in Holyoke and surrounding areas.
Three people drown in the Mississippi at St Gabriel as two girls fall into a deep hole and four boys attempt a rescue. Victims named are Kathleen Blouin 21 New Orleans Harold Leblanc 26 Baton Rouge and Alex Leblanc 24 Calville. Pauline LeBlanc survives, rescued by Elmo Deniel.
A million New Yorkers fled the sizzling city for Coney Island with record crowds. Police logged 596,900 in the surf and 259 missing children were returned to awaiting parents amid strained bathing and resort facilities.
Silver Bow county ranks twenty seventh of 56 with a 33 mill levy in 1927, down 2.067 mills over two years. The Montana Taxpayers Association notes county tax reductions while many counties raise levies. Musselshell tops at 50.5 mills, Wheatland has 22 mills.
More than 1,000 communists were arrested near Ivry on a forbidden meeting. Police used mass arrests as protesters refused orders to move. Large police and fire contingents and republican guards faced limited violence with few casualties.
Governor Smith reviewed the 69th and the 14th New York National Guard regiments encamped along the Hudson at Peekskill. He inspected the troops in the sun with Mrs. Smith nearby, traveling from New York to Albany aboard a yacht owned by shipbuilder William H. Todd before continuing upriver by auto.
The Atlantic transport liner Minnewaska carrying Captain Frank T. Courtney British aviator and three companions will enter quarantine in New York at 3 30 p m tomorrow. Officials said the ship will be about 11 hours late after wandering 341 miles off course during the search for the Dornier Napier seaplane Whale.
Polish Majors Idzikowski and Kubula were forced to ditch 60 miles off Cape Finisterre when a break in the gasoline feed line crippled their plane. They were rescued by the German steamer Samos and brought to Leixos near Oporto. One aviator was badly cut and treated at a military hospital. both expected to leave for Paris soon.
Ada Boswood age 29 pushed her 4-year-old daughter Betty Jean from an automobile just before a train struck the car at a grade crossing in Dallas Texas. Mrs Boswood was killed instantly while her child survived.
The Silver Leaf Baking plant in Spokane was dynamited early today injuring no one. The bakery, open shop for three months, sustained heavy damage to two large ovens valued at $5,000 each. Police attribute the act to labor troubles.
Senator elect William S. Vare of Philadelphia shows improvement after a illness that struck him at his Atlantic City home. A medical bulletin at 2:20 pm reports his temperature down to 99.3 from 101.4, nourishment intake, and no coma, with pulse and respiration improving though still cautious.
In Chicago on August 5 three Democratic spokesmen pressed for Volstead Act amendment and a new prohibition law. Senator Copeland of New York urged support for Governor Smith, citing religious tolerance and questioning anti-Catholic sentiment. Floyd W. Thompson and Anton J. Cermak highlighted the presidential candidate’s liquor stance.
