Delegations led by Silver Bow Cascade and Lewis and Clark, with speeches by Senators Carter Dixon and Representative Pray. Charles M Webster announced candidacy for governor.
A major forest fire near Taft on the Coeur d'Alene branch burned or ruined 4,000,000 feet of timber and destroyed three Milwaukee construction camps. The town was evacuated, 1,000 acres of timber were swept, and no lives were lost though a rancher was briefly trapped in the flames but rescued. Firefighters fought the blaze as winds shifted, with the fire now checked to a lesser spread by night.
Boston August 1 More than 2000 men will be idle Monday in New England due to threatened strikes and mill closures by the International Paper Company. A general order from New York to shut the mills cites low water and annual repairs. An order from J F Cary of the International Brotherhood of Paper Makers at Fort Edward N Y calls a strike over a 10 percent wage cut.
Miles City reported 108 degrees in the shade at the government station on August 1. Bricklayers and carpenters stopped briefly around 2 p.m. but most workers continued. No prostrations were reported.
George Frizel of Dayton W was nominated for Congress in the Third district by a majority of the congressional committee. He succeeds Col. H. G. Harrow who surrendered the nomination after his machine fatally struck a Dayton man.

Special Dispatch to the Standard Twin Bridges Aug 1 Thomas Gallahan of Twin Bridges drowned in the Big Hole river while fishing this forenoon. He and Nick Trailer waded near the Owsley ranch about two and a half miles from town. Gallahan disappeared after being caught in a current and rescue efforts were unsuccessful. The event is reported as the only immediate fatality with no further details available.

Marinette Wisconsin August 1 fire breaks out on the south wharf of the Sawyer Goodman company. It starts in a single lumber pile and spreads rapidly with a light wind toward the water. Big sawmill saved but lumber loss feared at 10 million feet and total damage around 17 percent.
Santa Cruz August 1 The wife of a San Francisco weekly editor Mrs Marriott and a chauffeur died when their car plunged over a grade near Van Lone summit on Bear Creek road from Ben Lomond. Mrs Marriott died from injuries and the chauffeur was killed instantly. Mrs Marriott revived later but has no memory of recent events and doctors suspect a powerful drug was given. Pittsburg August 1 Clara Koneter, missing from here since Monday, was found unconscious yesterday and revived today with amnesia regarding past events.
In Fairview Nebraska the preliminary draft of William J. Bryan acceptance speech was completed and set for type. Proofs will be sent to Bryan early next week for final corrections and plotting. Bryan attended a neighbor’s funeral during the day.
