Three men suspected of involvement in operations across the international line are to be arraigned today in connection with alleged cross border actions spanning four states and culminating in a Butte incident.
Three men believed named Willis McCoy C A Hoban and William Enright were captured in Billings after a high speed chase across several states. They faced U S Commissioner Van Etten for arraignment on charges of being Saskatchewan fugitives tied to liquor bootlegging and border crime.
Fighting near Maam Cross, County Galway, lasted 12 hours as police pursued a republican column. Constable killed, sergeant wounded, reinforcements with machine guns aided a surround and rebels fled to the hills with wounded. A priest was fired upon but escaped injury. Authorities found arms, beds for 40, and disguise gear. Raids at 32 post offices continued.
Chicago April 24 William Big Bill Haywood did not attend a farewell party at I W W headquarters for members who tomorrow return to Leavenworth to finish sentences imposed by Judge Landis. Haywood was said to be in Russia. Although more than a dozen speakers spoke, enthusiasm was low as forty six members are scheduled to report to the penitentiary or federal officials nationwide.
Chicago April 24. Rail line unions charge vast financial mismanagement by American railways from 1918 to 1919. The exhibit alleges fictitious capitalization totaling 692 million dollars, plus stock bonuses of 233.6 million and losses of 123 million. It cites improper marketing of securities totalling 51.46 million and annual interest and dividends on excess capitalization for several lines, including St. Louis and San Francisco, Reading, New York Central, and Baltimore and Ohio, with New York Central alone totaling 165 million since 1869.
Helena April 24. The industrial accident board led by A. E. Spriggs says Montana’s compensation administration costs average $20,000 per year, the lowest among states. For five and a quarter years, 1,376 employers under plan No 3 paid $804,668.17 in premiums, with $429,968.95 paid in benefits and a $374,699.20 balance. Pending claims total about $175,000, net reserve $200,900.
The district court in Deming New Mexico opens tomorrow for the trial of 16 alleged Villista raiders charged with murder from the March 9 1916 raid on Columbus New Mexico. The death penalty will be sought if they are convicted.
A wireless message from the Kamehatka's master reports the motor ship was destroyed by fire at sea near Pirate Cove, Alaska, on the night of April 15. The vessel’s 23 crew members are accounted for as safe.
In Lemberg police seized a fully operable counterfeiting plant pressing about $5,000,000 in bogus American money. Simon Lisner, his wife, Lisner's sister in law, and her husband were arrested. Lisner had recently come from Russia and allegedly learned the trade there, though it failed to pay.
Washington reports that imports from Germany in 1920 reached 88.8 million dollars, nearly nine times 1919 and about half the two prewar years' average. The Commerce Department summary compares 1920 with 1919 and with 1913 and 1912, noting sharp postwar changes.
Investigators from the Wall Street bomb inquiry continued the hunt for Tito Ligi's female companion, once identified by Thomas J. New York April 24 College scholarship and other educational work for former service men will consume the remainder of the Knights of Columbus war fund. Part of the fund, originally intended for a Washington memorial, will fund increased hospital facilities for disabled men. Requests from charitable organizations could not be considered as the fund will be expended entirely on former service men.
In The Dalles Oregon a 4 year old, Clifford Watson, fell into a shallow rain water pool at a family home yesterday evening. He was pulled from the water fifteen minutes later and a pulmotor was used but failed to revive him.
Four hundred Coblenz trained men leave Antwerp aboard the Somme for return home as casuals and for discharge or reenlistment. They are commanded by Major Francis T. Armstrong.
Spokane April 24 H E Simons vice president of the General Machinery company died tonight from injuries after an automobile accident last night near the city limits on Sunset boulevard. His car plunged through a fence and over an embankment and he was struck by heavy timber causing internal injuries.
The Steamer Orani bound from Portland to the United Kingdom was picked up in a disabled condition by the Jeptha. The Jeptha wirelessed the marine department that she will reach Punta Arenas, Costa Rica, with the Orani in tow by April 28.
Berlin and London dispatches detail German counter proposals on reparations, described as a liberal compromise between Paris demands and London offers. The German cabinet reportedly accepted the note late Saturday, with delays blamed on coalition leaders and dispute over note wording.
London April 15 The coal strike remains unresolved as informal talks since Friday fail to yield a settlement. There is no sign that owners will offer a revised wage scale acceptable to miners and external pressures rise with railway workers and transport staff refusing coal handling while international affiliates push for a total coal embargo on Great Britain.
The Associated Press reports 10 year census figures showing Germany Austria Ireland and Russia natives declined in the United States by nearly 2 million. Germany leads foreign born numbers but Austria suffers the largest percentage drop over the decade amid wartime immigration stoppages. Russia falls while Italy rises to second place in foreign born totals.
M F Anderson alias O W Crawford arrested on a Missouri warrant tells police a frame up by a partner aimed to prevent sharing eighty three thousand dollars from a buried hoard hidden near the Wyoming Montana line after a stage robbery gang. He says the partner, also known to police, will dig up the treasure if he is taken back to Missouri.
