Berlin reports the French occupation of the Ruhr came as a complete surprise to German officials. The government vows to protest and warns the move undermines the peace treaty and delays restoring order, while hoping rapid progress eases the occupied towns.
London reports no cabinet meeting on the French Rhine occupation as Lloyd George is away and Churchill travels in France. British press notes France acts without allied support and wonders why, while the United States protests and cautions Britain.
London April 6. Sir Fortesque Flannery MP says a flying ship that can float and submerge is not an impossible dream of the future. He spoke at a banquet of the Society of Consulting Marine Engineers and Ship Surveyors where he is president and suggested some may live to see it materialize.
Railroad managers estimate Chicago terminals crippled by an unauthorized switchmen strike on 18 roads and a blizzard will near normal by Saturday as yardmen from the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen arrive to replace the strikers.
Berlin reports that the northern Ruhr area including Duisburg and Dortmund is controlled by General Kabitsch from Wesel. Disarmament advances only where the Reichswehr holds full command. Milwaukee April 6 mayoral returns from 150 of 199 Precincts show D W Hoan socialist winning a third term with 80299 votes to Clifton Williams 26840. Observers expect final tally to place Hoan ahead by about 3500.
Four women pickets from Land Forces were arrested after wandering from the British embassy area to drop propaganda leaflets. Aerials released messages aimed at British policy, while winds scattered the packets across Lafayette Square and Dupont Circle. The incident drew attention to the international angle of the protests, with the four named defendants from Pennsylvania and Missouri.
Herbert C Hoover tried to register as a Republican for California primaries but his registration affidavit from New York arrived too late to be entered. Mrs Hoover’s affidavit also arrived late.
