At a special education board meeting Miss Schreiner was offered and accepted another year as principal with a $1200 salary after the Des Moines West High School extended a very complimentary offer. She is to be congratulated for this recognition of her merit and leadership.
A letter from Boone Block Coal Company confirms shipping the car ordered by Lon G. Hardin of Ames Iowa and asks if delivery is convenient or if the order is still wanted. The response states the firm decided not to buy the car of coal.
The Kelley column notes a temperance lecture scheduled for next Monday September 26. Des Moines visitors include Mr and Mrs Rigby with Mrs Rigby staying for a few days. Mr N Williams of Des Moines visited Sunday. Grace Loman married Louis Holland with Rev Walter Fowle officiating in Ames. About forty five guests attended.
Thomas H. MacDonald of Ames, Iowa, chair of the State Highway Commission, cites Geo Harvey’s view that good roads and motor cars save time and enable labor. He notes Iowa’s 1910 highway investment exceeds 5 million dollars, with emphasis on drainage, grading, and permanent bridges using concrete.
J W Bateman went to Eagle Grove on business last week. Mr and Mrs C N Moses were Nevada visitors last Wednesday. Willard King from Alexandria Ind returned home last week. Mrs Eugene Livingston spent Wednesday at the Hardcastle home. Mr Andrew Crooks and Lola were Nevada visitors Friday. Kensella a brother in law of Mrs J A Heintz from Chenoa Ill visited at the Heintz home. Mrs Dan Hardcastle and Margaret left for Tustin Colo Saturday. Pearl Banks spent Saturday and Sunday at Bateman and Banks homes. Wm Frey from Ames was a guest of Allie Bateman Sunday. C N Moses and sons Scott Verne and Fred Porter and children spent Sunday at R D Tressler home near Gilbert. Delbert Sowers called in Milford Sunday. Pantenberg from Ontario spent Sunday at Heintz home.
The engineering department invites alumni students and faculty to a camp fire Saturday September 24 1910 from 3 p m to 10 p m near the railroad bridge over Squaw creek. Bring lunch and the ladies to join in the fellowship and fun.
First Baptist church of Des Moines has shown Passion Play pictures presented by pastor Howland Hanson for three Sundays in succession. Hanson, who visited Oberammergau, speaks from direct knowledge and will present the pictures in Ames next week with date to be announced.
Miss Blanche Easterly has accepted a position as evangelistic soloist and chorus leader and departed Monday for Elliott Iowa to begin work under Rev Tohmpson. She previously assisted Rev Houser and brings experience in that line of work.
Pete English a plasterer from the south side was jailed after a Saturday night drinking spree. In Eldora he ran out of material and returned home to an abusive scene with his wife and three children. Judge Lee sentenced him to Knoxville with weekly reporting and a chance to suspend the commitment if sobriety holds.
Football and track work at the college begins with a booster meeting urging more men to join. The fall football schedule opens October 1 with Coe at Ames and features a November 5 Iowa at Ames game. Uniforms switch to white wool for safety from colored woolens.
The Sophomores edged the Freshmen 17 to 0 in the Iowa State College Push Ball contested Friday afternoon. The 13s, with prior pushing experience, held the lead while the Freshmen showed solid effort, ending with a campus snake dance and a brief peace talk by President Stanton.
The week brought cool cloudy weather with over two inches of rain across central regions. Corn is maturing with 65 to 70 percent safe from frost, while frost risk remains if severe freezing occurs. Farmers harvest seed corn, cut fodder and silage, and plant winter grains as fall plowing advances. Winter wheat acreage is expected to rise and temperatures rise for several days.
James O'Donnell won multiple prizes at the Marshall county fair for hogs chickens and poultry. The list includes a litter of seven pigs and a show total of 550 pigs with various first second and third prizes ranging from 85 cents to 38 dollars across classes for young pigs boars sired litters and Rhode Island Red Capons.
Art West a long time Ames resident with no visible means of support was arrested after a U S marshal traced him to Boone and Des Moines. He faces federal court charges for selling liquor without a license.
Prof. M L Bowman, secretary of the Iowa Corn Growers Association, urges farmers to harvest well matured seed corn now to avoid frost damage. He notes two ears on one stalk can differ in maturity and moisture, recommending picking twelve ears per acre by early October. He highlights the eighth annual Iowa Corn Growers Exposition in Des Moines from December 5 to 17 with over 20000 in premiums including 1000 for oats.
Reed formerly with the Sioux City Weather Bureau and tied to Reliance Life Insurance of Pittsburg has been offered the post of first assistant in the U S bureau office in New York City. The move is described as an excellent promotion and is expected to be accepted.
Jimmy Forrest formerly with Marsh Bridge Co Des Moines died suddenly last Friday at his parents home in Garner Iowa. He worked through college and contributed time to the Times office, leaving a mark as a diligent and hustling young man.

The local carpenters union plans to greet delegates from the International Carpenters Union visiting Des Moines. A special train will bring them to Ames next Saturday for a campus excursion likely to fill much of the day. A college committee led by Prof Stevenson guides the itinerary and displays.
Dr Jennie Ghrist will give a talk on her journey to the Orient at the city library Monday afternoon September 26 at 2:30. A general invitation to the public to attend is extended. She carried letters of introduction to many stops, enabling her to gain more from the tour than most in the Clark company.
Large crowds attend Bloomington meetings led by Rev. John T. Houser as confessions are made. The church was packed Sunday night with strong attendance each night this week. Miss Zoe Hauser assists as soloist. meetings continue through the week and possibly into next.
Miss Margaret Stanton left Monday for Boulder Colorado to join a preparatory school's history department. She taught the previous week as a supply teacher in Madison Wisconsin high school.
Guy Griffith came home from the hospital in Des Moines on Saturday and is recovering after his operation. Though weak he grows stronger and has walked downtown several times.
The Science Club of Iowa State College held its first monthly meeting in the animal husbandry lecture room Monday night. Dr. R. E. Buchanan delivered a talk on Immunity.
A daughter named Harriett Frances Case was born September 19 in Malvern Iowa to Mr and Mrs Harold M Case. The father and mother were students at I S C and the mother is remembered as Miss June Budd.
Mrs A V Martin left Ireland Tuesday for America to join her husband in Marshalltown. She is expected by next Thursday and may visit Ames at the home of her brother-in-law, Gus Martin, for a few weeks before they establish residence in Marshalltown where Mr A V Martin works as a clerk.
Rev Walter I Fowle will serve as platform manager for Chautauqua in Missouri next summer and oversee Bible study work. He has several dates lined up and will guide Missourians in the event’s program.
Harry Childs and his family move from Nevada to Ames and will occupy the house on Eighth Street vacated by the W A Perry family. He and his brother W M Childs plan a produce business in Ames, believing it a better location than Boone or Nevada after trying both.
