Slater farmer nursed after near fatal mower accident

Fred Nelson of Slater narrowly escaped death while mowing a hay field when a pet turkey spooked his team causing a runaway. Nelson jumped from the seat to scare the bird, was trampled by the team, and struck by the mowing guard. A gopher mound deflected the blade, sparing him serious injury. He rode to the stable before tending his wounds. doctors warn of possible infection.

Mrs Mae Heitzman a Lincoln saloon keeper’s wife arrived by train in Story City and confronted Julius Peters the telephone lineman she accused of betrayal. She drew a gun hidden at her waist and fired at him after he declined to sit with her. He escaped and she was arrested minutes later.

Promised Man Sealed Fate in County Case

Mrs Peters and Mr Peters trembled as the sheriff sent Mrs Heitzman to jail while a grand jury weighs the case this month. She writes her husband a truth telling letter and expects little help. Peters is bonded as prosecuting witness. The blonde woman awaits in jail.

Interurban Crossing Drainage Plan Discussed at City Council

City Engineer McDonald reported drainage improvements at Onondaga Street and Duff Avenue to raise the track six inches, remove dirt between the house track and street center, and install planking for full street use. Grading at the intersection was referred to the street and alley committee and a copy sent to F D M & S Railway manager Blake. Freight hauling hours were not addressed.

Prof J A McLean, assistant professor in animal husbandry, heads to the Mississippi experiment station at Starkville joining the state agricultural college. The role is entirely experimental with a salary rise, marking a career advance though he has only two years of service left in Ames. He graduated in 1905 and has worked in Colorado before returning to Ames.

H E Bemis, veterinary graduate from Iowa State College class of 08, returns from Chicago where he served the government and accepts a position in the veterinary department. Dr McNeil’s vacancy remains unfilled likely until year’s start. Work is shared among three professors with Bemis leading surgery and clinics, and Stang handling clinics.

Night Agent Robbed at Northwest Depot by Two Bandits

Two masked men with blue handkerchiefs robbed the Northwestern ticket office at 2:30 am, forcing agent H V Robinson to open the cash drawer and lie on the floor. They fled with $39.60 as officers hunted for suspects described as ordinary, well dressed men seen in the depot vicinity.

Man Arrested at Arlington Hotel for Intoxication

Jack Karnes of Des Moines was arrested at the Arlington hotel by Marshal Thompson on a Saturday morning charge of intoxication. He appeared in mayor's court, paid a $5 fine plus costs, and left. Karnes had a two quart jug of Rye hidden in his luggage and claimed to have met George Nichols in Des Moines.

Woman starts a sensation in Nevada assault suit

A sensational damage suit filed by Mrs. Josephine Geer of Nevada accuses Marshall E. Boynton of assaulting her at her home on August 24. The petition seeks $10,000, with Boynton retaining Attorney Addison to contest the claim amid local gossip and defense from friends of the defendant.

Berggren Accepts Colorado Teaching Post

Axel E B Berggren of Marshalltown Iowa and 1908 Iowa State College mechanical engineering graduate has accepted a position as instructor in the mechanical engineering department at the State University of Colorado. He finished with high marks and was active in the Cardinal Guild and the Y M C A. He will depart soon for Boulder to begin duties.

At Ottumwa meeting September 16 17 18 1908 the city mayor and clerk attended as delegates to a league session. An electric light project for Boone Sumner and Woodmar streets was referred to the electric light committee. City wide taxes set: general fund 10 mills electric light 5 mills water works 5 mills grading 3 mills library 3 mills sewer districts 1 2 3 3 mills road tax on agricultural lands 4 mills.
