Fire Alarm Recounts A Falsely Reported Blaze

Sunday evening a false fire alarm drew spectators into the streets as volunteers seized a hose cart and chased a supposed blaze at Barker bakery three blocks north of Liddle's corner. The fire was out by the time crews arrived with no damage noted. A week of timely rain followed.

W D Elwell bought the second hand store from E B Wine who ran it for about a year. Elwell will operate the shop at the current site and Wine stays on as upholsterer. The venture continues under the Commercial Exchange name.

District Court Dockets Show Large Term Ahead

District court opened at the county seat with Judge Lee in charge for a four week term remarkable for a 246 case docket. The grand jury met. six jurors were drawn and a foreman chosen. Of the cases, 167 are old, 40 new with 21 from Grant township ditch five appeals, 25 probate, and 14 criminal. Notable items include W T Tiernager, M J Harding, gambling and liquor prosecutions, and a divorce batch including Kirkpatrick and Fry cases.

Another Man to the Front in Mining Leadership

W. B. Cole of Ames, ISU mining graduate from the class of 1906, resigns as assistant engineer at Boston Consolidated Co. in Bingham Utah to become chief mining engineer of the McCracken Hill Mining Co. in Signal Arizona. The McCracken Hill mine is a major western operation partly owned by Chicago interests Pullman and Armour. Prospectors plan a new railroad to connect the mine to the outside world next year. Cole reportedly has stake in the mine he will oversee.

Ames Banks Adopted Currency On Call Plan

Ames banks continue to pay currency on call with ample funds. Herman Knapp, treasurer of the Iowa state college, inaugurated a checking system on Thursday, giving students blank checks to cash against their deposits. He notes about five hundred depositors and expects currency needs to be met in a few days.
