For the second time in months the Munn Lumber office was broken into between Saturday night and Monday morning. The thieves left twenty cents in pennies in the cash drawer and locked a desk and back door, taking both keys. No clue has been found, but the intruders appeared familiar with the layout.
The first state peace oration contest is set for Friday night at Central University in Pella Iowa. Mike Emerson will speak for Ames on America and Peace in the Orient. Nine colleges compete for state honors with $75 for first and $50 for second. Emerson enters the event after illness interrupted practice.
Gov. I. B. F. Carroll proclaims May 14 1911 as Mothers Day urging Iowa churches to observe the second Sunday in May with special reverence. He notes the tradition of honoring mothers and requests wearing white carnations as a symbol of purity and devotion to mothers.
State reports show nine interurban firms generated 1,232,401 in gross sales with 412,529 in net earnings in 1910. Fort Dodge Des Moines and Southern led with 504,648 gross and 190,000 rise in gross from 1909 while net earnings grew 16,000. The nine firms earned 395,692 in 1909 on 1,402,401 gross.
Pete English a local plasterer and brick mason fled city officers Sunday, slipping east over the hills after a night in jail with four others. He claimed a sick wife to seek leniency, was released, and remains at large as deputies search areas near Nevada and Knoxville.
Mrs J F Williams fell from a window seat while hanging curtains last Thursday and suffered serious injuries. She remains bedbound but shows slow improvement. Agricultural department upperclassmen at the college supervise county experiment plots planting this week.
The school board met in regular session to approve bills and routine business. Miss Margaret Mickey of Renwick was elected to the primary department, a Drake University graduate with two years of primary experience. Three architects from Des Moines and Chicago presented ideas for a modern school building, but no architect was hired yet. the aim is to be ready to proceed if the election results favor it, with the south side school to be finished before the fall term and plans due shortly after election.
The Ames school board presents the South Side and Central building conditions asking voters to approve a new high school project. It outlines aging facilities, crowding, ventilation problems, fire risk, need for a gym, laboratories, and modern classrooms with future expansion, heat, and safety upgrades.
Dr Shailer Matthews editor of World Today will deliver a chapel address on Sunday May 21 at the college chapel. He is recognized as a leading thinker on modern religious questions and author of The Social Teachings of Jesus. Next Sunday I B Brown of Chicago a leading Y M C A worker will give the chapel talk.
Ames High School has entered five athletes in the Des Moines state high school meet one week from Saturday. Jones competes in pole vault high jump and broad jump. Clapper in the mile and half mile. Eldredge and Cameron in shot put and discus. Bollman in 100 and 220 yard dashes and hurdles. Supt Hicks filed entries Tuesday. With this season’s showing Ames is poised to score.
The secretary of state records show 203 marriage licenses and 14 divorces in Story county during 1910. Statewide totals for the same period are 21 538 marriage licenses and 2 274 divorces.
The men's glee club presented a highly praised closing lecture course program assisted by Miss Sybil Lentner, the student orchestra, and Miss Ingeborg Tune. Eight numbers plus encores highlighted the evening with selections like Iowa Song and The Soldier's Chorus, plus notable solos by Hitchings Benton and R M Clark. The event featured ten piece orchestra, readings by Miss Lentner, and signaled a strong season and promising next year.
The Ames High School Chautauqua declamatory contest takes place Friday evening May 2 at 8 o clock at the Congregational church. Seven contestants enter with five in the dramatic class and two in humorous. Winners receive 5 dollars plus another 5 dollars from the association if the selection is performed at the Chautauqua. Admission is 25 cents.
Saturday evening May 13 the famous Roney's Boys Concert company of Chicago will give a concert in the Baptist church. The company is in its twenty third season under Mr Roney's personal training and management. The Venango Daily Herald notes the personnel of the organization with Franklin Pennsylvania as a recent appearance.
A group stole a college car about four o'clock Saturday morning leaving it at the east end of main street. After a brief joy ride to the power station grade and near Squaw Creek bridge the car was found damaged with broken windows. Police warned such antics are unlikely to pay.
A Cedar Rapids dispatch says the state board of education will meet about May 26 to consider charges against Professor Holden. Representative Moore accuses him of using his office to boost Idaho land sales. The meeting is the board’s regular session with Holden’s retention as the expected main issue.
The board of supervisors on Saturday sent the Milford No 32 ditch back to engineer John M. Wells with orders to reduce capacity by twenty five percent and produce a new report. Widespread debate centers on whether the ditch is needed and if its benefits justify the current proposed cost.
Alumni banquet tickets are on sale and may be bought through former students working in local businesses. Story county alumni are urged to purchase at least two tickets for the May 29 banquet in the Methodist church dining room with toasts and class reunions planned.
