An Ames effort to fund a new auditorium shows strong early support. A committee proposed a 11 0000 capital plan funded by cash stock gifts and a mortgage balance, with Captain Greeley named as donor inspiration. Early reports show 1770 raised in three days and broad youth involvement, aiming for 11 000.00 total by March 15 with dividends possible as stockholders join.
Mrs Adolph Shane was summoned to Montezina Monday due to her father's serious illness. He remains unimproved and suffers a stroke of paralysis worsened by extreme age.
Mr and Mrs Dows left for Marquette Michigan last Friday after a delightful visit here with President and Mrs Stanton and other old friends.
An alarm Friday sent Ames firefighters to the old Gleaning hack near Futh and Duff behind the Ames Hotel but they arrived too late. a rare turnout line inside raised fears of major damage. A second blaze Sunday at Mrs. R. C. Frazier’s barn at 18 Second Street was saved by bystanders with water buckets before the company arrived. arson was suspected but no severe damage occurred.
W S Mitchell, a special student in Agricultural Education at Ames, was found dead in his Acacia House room around 2 30 PM Monday. Coroner reports heart failure, inquest not required. Friends and family from Clinton, Oelwein, Corning, and nearby areas attended services and funeral arrangements were held. Mitchell, a 1900 State Normal graduate and former football player, had a bright academic record and planned a summer Montana extension project with Prof. Bishop. He was a Master Mason and widely respected by classmates.
The Intelligencer corrects a mistaken report naming Frank Haverly as a race participant. It states Frank Latherow actually lost a five dollar bill to a tailor who fled. Rickets recovered the man in Des Moines.
On Mr W M Seeley’s seventy first birthday celebration gifts included a $1908 donation from Captain Greeley toward the new Chautauqua Auditorium fund. The auditorium will be named the Greeley Auditorium in his honor as the campaign aims to raise $4000 by March 4. By now $3230 has been pledged with daily efforts continuing as nine days remain to reach the goal.
Miss Mary Walker, a servant at President Stanton's campus home, contracted diphtheria Monday prompting instant quarantine of "The Maples." The case is mild. Mrs. Stanton remains in the house to care for her. Mr. Stanton and several students were quarantined outside and moved to Alamni Hall.
Old resident Mrs. A B K Gildings learns of her brother Thomas Porch's death in Stevensville Montana. Porch had lived in Story county about forty years ago on a farm south of town and was remembered by early county residents.
Dr Stange returned from Weyburn Canada with State Veter inarian Gibson after inspecting horses ordered killed by Canadian inspectors. Post mortem found no glanders, so Canada must compensate for nineteen horses at two hundred dollars each.
The Dairy department hosts its third annual banquet Friday night March 22 with about two hundred expected attendees. The event invites all interested in dairying, admission is one dollar, and a new plum pudding dish will be featured among a full menu. Prominent dairy figures Bil Galloway W W Marsh W B Barney and others will attend and toast: Starters Standards The Cow The Consumer Markets among others.
Plans have been laid for the 43rd semi annual meeting of the Upper Des Moines Editorial Association. About 150 visitors are expected on March 28 and 29 for entertainments in Ames including private homes and fraternity lodges. The committee, led by Acting President Stanton, has scheduled talks on newspaper roles, public responsibilities, and building circulation, with sessions at 2:30 PM Thursday and 9 AM Friday, followed by plant and college tours.
Brit Olson remains seriously ill with recent reports indicating no longer as well. He and his son Sanford traveled south for health reasons and showed signs of improvement before a release at the start of the week.
Miss Ruth Barrett of Ames, an Ames gh and honor student in General Science, won the Senior Class play contest as her production titled Wigs Gasteles plas it. was chosen. Three plays were submitted with judges U Fo Clemimier Helen White and Kisie RK Bissell. Barrett’s work was selected as most adaptable for college production to be staged during Commencement week with tryouts planned in April.
Mr and Mrs Chelsea Ruth report their daughter in Franklin township is recovering after a serious illness last week. The child shows steady improvement and is on the road to recovery.
Col Steven Parker OBrien a Civil War veteran and longtime Story county resident died Sunday morning after years of paralysis. Born December 24 1825 in Ohio he enlisted in 1846 in Indiana and came to Story county in 1848. He married Sadie Hiestand in 1848 and raised six children. he was 98. He leaves sixteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. The funeral was held Tuesday at the Methodist church in Ames with local veterans organizations taking part.
Mr Geo Roll Sr was forced to lay off from work for a few days this week due to illness. The notice records a temporary absence impacting his employment and schedule.
A twelve pound baby boy was born to Mr and Mrs J Wheeler last Friday morning in a local birth announcement noting the new arrival and parent names.
