Frank Spence, the fruit man, has rented the Willey Produce Company building on South Kellogg Street for a wholesale and warehouse department. His jobbing business has grown enough to separate from retail, freeing space for the wholesale side while he seeks a new Main Street retail location.
Last Thursday evening at the bride’s parents home on Duff avenue the wedding of J. R. Hollingsworth of Des Moines and Miss Charlotte Sheehey took place. Rev. Walter I. Fowle officiated with Miss Clara McConnell playing. The ceremony was intimate with only relatives and a few close friends. The couple will visit in Iowa City and Des Moines before setting up home on West Sixth street. Hollingsworth works as night chief of the Western Union in Des Moines.
John Adams writes to Abigail on July 2 1776 predicting a national festival for independence. He envisions pomp and devotion across the continent despite the costs, believing the end justifies the sacrifice.
The writer visits the J. Roup shoe shop on West Main Street and finds it lively with customers and repaired shoes ready for delivery. Mr Roup and his assistant are busy, and he notes business remains strong during the usual dull summer months.
Mrs Jane Smith born in county Down Ireland on March 19 1835 died June 26 1910 aged 75 years 3 months and 7 days at the home of her daughter Mrs Will Lawson She emigrated to Canada with her parents and later resided with her daughter in Canada
The obituary recounts a woman who married in 1867 in Hamilton Canada, had five children with William Smith, four surviving to adulthood in Kansas Nebraska and Iowa, joined the Presbyterian church in youth, and lay in state with funeral services held at the U B church conducted by Rev Warner Johnson on a Tuesday.
Dr Crissman, pastor of the M E church, will preach both morning and evening sermons on Sunday in preparation for the Fourth of July. The church will be decorated with national colors and patriotic hymns will be sung. Parents are urged to bring their children to services.
J. W. Tinsley the jeweler moved his shop last week from the Cagwin drug store into the Adams grocery. The clock will be moved to the Adams corner. Cagwin reorganized his interior to allow more room and an improved store layout.
Mr. Schocker of Nebraska spent the past week at the Heintz home. Mrs Brokaw visited Milford friends. Mr. and Mrs. Dudley Arrasmith of Ames spent Sunday with the Hardcastle family. Virginia Marie Nelms, child of Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Nelms, has been quite sick. The Batemans and Sanders visited McCallsburg by auto. The Sanders and Bateman families hosted and visited in Ames and Milford. J W Bateman attended the state Sunday school convention in Mason City. Chauncey Hickle and children visited John Scott in Milford.
Misses Kelley visit Blanche and Reba Apple in Des Moines while Dr. Adamson builds a home south town. Ontario visitor Mrs Fannie Ross returns Monday. A Tuesday tent show draws good patrons. Bondy family occupies J Starks brick cottage. Freed visit with daughter Mrs Johnson near Ontario. Madge Gossard buys a piano in Des Moines. Kelley schools close with a Zumwalt's picnic. Grace Hughes hosts the young peoples society rain dampens attendance. Local party at Freels. next Saturday entertainment at the Hall with ice cream cake and lemonade. Admission ten cents for church organ fund.
The Ames high school girls basketball team will play the Maxwell girls on July Fourth at Maxwell. The matchup sets a local Independence Day game with both squads aiming for a short, festive contest.
A Times report describes a Sheehey home wedding incident where older and younger boys led a mob in a chaotic charivari. Windows, greens, and silver were damaged, guests injured slightly, and a $25 settlement reached after mayoral mediation. Hogs sold for nine dollars a hundred, totaling about seventeen hundred dollars in losses.
J Jacobs of the Fair store in Ames has bought a half interest in a wholesale clothing house in Chicago. He will remain a resident of Ames and continue as president of the Fair store, splitting time between Ames and Chicago. The Times offers best wishes as the venture progresses.
The marriage of Miss Ruth Catell to Mr. James Mason took place at the west of the college with Rev. Walter I. Fowle officiating. The service featured an impressive ring ceremony marking the union.
Will Taylors team rode past Frank Morris livery stable Monday when a bicycle incident nearly escalated. Os McCoy and bystanders nearby provided timely assistance preventing serious trouble.
W H Beedle of the western outskirts, previously bedridden with a severe stomach ailment for four weeks, was in town Saturday. He appears improved though he has shed some of his vigor and vivacity.
Osmund Johnson sold his residence on Grand Avenue last week to Wm Bakely of Ogden and gave possession yesterday for four thousand dollars. The Johnson family will move across the street into the Cline house as Bakely relocates to Ames with two daughters entering college.
Alva Hill rode his motorcycle Sunday evening trying to outrun an advancing storm. While watching the cloud, he hit a dog, wrecking both the animal and the bike, though he escaped with slight bruises.
The Boone Daily News lauds Rev. Houser whose Ames address before the state convention of Christian churches drew praise for clarity and vigor. His talk on the churchs purpose and progress in Iowa highlighted past year work and reports, lasting about forty minutes.
Grant Barker, a longtime sufferer of inflammatory rheumatism, was taken yesterday to the sanatorium at Nevada for care by trained nurses. His many friends hope for his early recovery as he remains in pretty bad shape.
The fourth district convention of the Iowa Christian Workers closed its first annual session last evening in Webster City. Frank C. Worsing of Webster City was elected secretary treasurer and official delegate to the state convention to be held in Gladbrook in the latter part of July.
Mr Melvin Brooks was hospitalized in Des Moines last Friday after a paralytic stroke. Family reports he is not improving as rapidly as friends anticipated.
During Friday evening storm lightning struck the Graves residence south of town starting a small fire that was quickly controlled. Mrs. Graves and Mr. A J Graves received slight shocks. Mr Graves has been almost totally deaf since the incident.
The Roberson boys will vacate the old machine shop on South Kellogg and move their machinery works into the Roberson building with their father on Main Street. The consolidation reduces space needs and secures a better location with rent savings.
Turner McLain sold a car load of hogs last week bringing good cash. The sale yielded a healthy sum as buyers bid steadily and the hogs moved quickly from pens to market.
Last Thursday afternoon Mrs Henry Wilson hosted about thirty guests at a Kensington to honor Mrs Junkin of Red Oak and Mrs Ramsey of Rock Rapids. The guests spent the afternoon recalling old times and were served ice cream and cake by Carolyn Adams, Helen Rameey and Josephine Junkin.
The Times misreported that W P George went to Idaho. George says he will stay in Ames to finish his duties as secretary of the Chau taqua association before any travel.
Mrs F. N. Darner, recently operated on at Mercy hospital in Des Moines, returned to Ames on Sunday.

Rev Crissman of the Methodist church was secured to deliver the Story City Fourth of July address in Ames after President A B Storms of I B C was called to Boston. Dr Crissman is described as an excellent orator and will give Story City a strong address.
Last Wednesday Mildred Persons stepped on a rusty nail in the yard and suffered a deep cut. She was taken to Ames where Dr. Templeton dressed the wound and reports healing, though still painful, with a return to play expected in time.
The Ames post office stays open on July 4 until 10 30 a m with no evening service. City carriers handle window service until 10 30 a m while rural carriers open 8 30 to 10 30 a m at the window.
Word has been received that James W Lyon formerly of this city and son of C E Lyon was operated on last Saturday for appendicitis in Algona. He is getting along nicely at last reports.
The interurban management announces repairs at the Fraser power plant are complete and cars are back on schedule. This news pleases patrons of the line.
The public opening of the fourth session of the Graduate School of Agriculture is set for Wednesday, July 6 at 8 PM in the Assembly Room of the New Hall of Agriculture. Noted speakers include Secretary James Wilson of the U S Department of Agriculture and Dean Curtis from Iowa State College.
Dr H D Bergman a top honor student in the I S C veterinary department has been appointed assistant to Dean Stange of the Ames veterinary college. He gains strong local practice and declined positions elsewhere to remain in Ames as reported by the Times.

J Burdick of Ames and Miss Zayde Brown of Watertown Wis were married Tuesday evening June 28 at the A B parsonage with Rev Warner Johnson officiating.
Herbert T. Pickler a sophomore veterinary student died at his Ottumwa home last week from typhoid fever.
Miss Harriet Pommel will act as referee for the Ames Maxwell basketball game on July 4th.
The state convention of the C W E M is being held in Boone this week. A great many of the members of the Christian church are in attendance.
Fred Willey was taken seriously ill Sunday afternoon with heart trouble. He is somewhat improved at this writing but has had quite a siege of it this week.
On Wednesday evening the Missionary society of the Congregational church held their regular meeting. The program was given by the men the subject being Turkey.
Last Thursday evening the ladies of the Catholic church hosted an ice cream social on the church lawn. A large crowd attended and about twenty three dollars was cleared.
Miss Nellie Zenor daughter of Mr and Mrs A A Zenor sustained a hip wound from a stray shot when boys were shooting at a target last week. The incident occurred near the family residence as authorities investigate the accident.
The summer school in Nevada began this week with many high school graduates in attendance including Laura Gibson June Dunham Pyrle Henry Hazel Brandt Eva Cox Florence Holm Anna Deacon and Florence Smith from Ames.
