An eleven year old boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Smith, was playing on a box car at a college sid ing when he contacted a live wire. His shirt torn, right arm badly lacerated, the boy fell and was shocked but survived with the college physician Dr Tilden’s care and reports he is improving.
H C Loring of Boston receiver for Ft. Dodge Des Moines and Southern Railroad asked the state executive council to cancel the assessment on sixty miles of steam track in Iowa between Newton Des Moines Junction Ft Dodge Junction and Rockwell City. He said the steam end is nearly useless and the company would operate only the electric part, possibly abandoning the Newton Northwestern section and not electrifying other divisions.
About 30 youths joined Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Banks for a birthday celebration with light refreshments. Visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Erb and their Masonville baby touring Des Moines for hospital visits. Additional social stops featured travels to Boone and Nevada as Milford residents hosted and visited kin and friends.
County Attorney Hadley of Nevada conferred with General Lincoln on provisioning for the I N G encampment at Sparta Wisconsin. The 53d 55th and 56th brigades head to Sparta around August 10 with other states represented including North and South Dakota Minnesota and Wisconsin. General Lincoln says a US military range will be developed on 15000 nearby acres at Sparta with 40 to 50 thousand dollars spent on improvements and buildings to improve sanitation.
Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Finch mourn the death of their infant. A short funeral was held at their home Sunday afternoon at four o'clock. Sheriff Warrick was seen on our streets Monday. Mabel and Blanche Rosenfeld visit Aunt Mrs C F Davis east of Gilbert this week. Miss Rier son from Cambridge was in town last Saturday afternoon.
Michael Leonard Connor died at his South Ames home on Friday July s Bright's disease. He was 59 years 1 month and 9 days old. Funeral services were held at the Catholic church with Father Renier officiating and burial followed in Ames Cemetery. Connor served the Co and N W in track work and most recently supervised switchlights in the Ames yards. His illness was brief and his death sudden.
Prof Storm will close his engagement as instructor in the summer school this week. His agriculture and nature study course has been highly appreciated by students. His genial manner and willingness to help have earned him many friends.
A Mt Ayr Record-News item states that steady labor on the farm will yield larger returns over time and deepen appreciation for the appealing aspects of rural living.

A son born July 7 to Mr and Mrs Merton Moore at Henry S Oak, with Mrs Moore identified as former Ames resident Alice Boyd.
A miniature imitation of the Panama canal operates at the campus northeast corner as an extension of the heating tunnel. It will extend to Margaret hall, the new D E building, and old Ag hall with hopes for a link to the grand central interurban station.
The writer visits Joe Diffenbacher's market garden on Sunday and spots corn that stands nine feet high with six inch stalks at the base. He notes a strong display planned for the state fair this fall and expects good weather to help secure prizes.
Delegates at the Boone Judicial convention reported a good time as three incumbents were nominated by acclamation. Boone attorneys headed by Bill Goodykoontz provided entertainment with music and a luncheon at the Country Club.

Wes Bateman cut a gash in his thumb when a sickle slipped. Rumors accuse Uncle Henry McCarthy of a prank after a checker game, but Wes insists the cat harvest must be completed despite the accusation.
Harry Howard, who left Goldenrod Texas on a leave from Station A post office, reports a transfer to the Houston Texas mailing division. He notes an excellent opportunity for advancement with competitive exams for higher positions, as Ames friends hope he reaches the top of the ladder.
A committee studying Main street lighting estimates a total cost of 1200 dollars for sixteen five light electroliers. They have secured 900 dollars in subscriptions, mainly from Main street supporters, with additional backers likely. The lights promise aesthetic value even if benefits to donors are limited.
Louis Dorrance and Florence Shockley of Ames married in Boone Monday at 4 30 with Judge Carswell officiating. Dorrance, a barber at Rich shop, and Shockley daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Shockley.
The farm department at the college sold a fourteen months old bull for 600 dollars to French and Thatchero lowana stock farm at Davenport. The animal was described as a beauty and among the best in the country.
Ed Silliman files suit against the county claiming misuse of a corn binder loaned to the county farm during his tenure on the board of supervisors. The action centers on loan terms and recovery of the equipment or its value.
The graduate school at Ames reports 158 registrants from 34 states and three foreign countries Cuba Russia and Denmark plus uncounted foreign lecturers. Recent events include a home economics program at Agricultural assembly a Farm House reception for about 150 and a University visit to Edgeworth Farm in Marshalltown where professors and graduates from multiple states observed crops and facilities. Lectures this week cover plant breeding soils forest pathology and animal husbandry with speakers from Austria and various U S departments and colleges.
A Jones Sawyer Cobb family reunion held at H. A. Cobb home in Jackson township Boone county drew many relatives from Story and Boone counties. Officers elected include President H. A. Cobb Vice President Frank Sawyer and Sec and Treas T. L. Jones. Members listed include Perry Sawyer Ames Iowa Hattie Sawyer Ames Iowa Harold P. Sawyer Ames Iowa Rollin C. Sawyer Ames Iowa Marie E. Sawyer Ames Iowa Lucile M. Sawyer Ames Iowa Kenneth Q. The gathering established a permanent organization and annual picnic event.
The education al board has authorized a two year course in agriculture aimed at practical instruction with optional scientific or cultural studies. It targets former boys unable to commit to the full four year program and plans separate maintenance funding after this winter's legislative session.

Nate Posegate tried to kill himself by turning on gas at a Dy Moines boarding house. He sought to marry landlady Mary Hardin, who refused. Both Posegate and landlady formerly lived in Nevada. no fatality occurred.
Story County reports Miss Mollie Ryerson aged about twenty four committed death by own action Saturday by drinking concentrated poison. She lived with her parents Mr and Mrs Lew Ryerson near Cambridge and her death is said to be prompted by health concerns. She was popular locally and deeply mourned by friends.
A country tour and crop check show no shortage fears. The oat crop is in shock with no rust or rot and should yield well. Other small grains appear healthy and corn, though uneven, is progressing well.
In a Times note, Harry Cole is described as forming a quarter section in South Dakota when he actually owns a thousand acres. Three hundred acres are planted in buckwheat cakes and several steen acres in flax, correcting earlier reporter's figures.
M G Hook of Humboldt a junior in the M B E program was operated on Tuesday in Marshalltown for appendicitis. A small stone was found lodged in the appendix. Hook is seriously ill but expected to recover.

Mrs. Farnsworth of Avoca has purchased the Speers property on Northwestern avenue. Possession is set for the middle of August. The Speers family will move into their Kel lege avenue home now occupied by Dr. Stange.
President Loring and Manager Blake toured the city Sunday to inspect the cement foundation for the paving between rail tracks and expressed dissatisfaction with its condition.
