The Ames Chautauqua secures William Jennings Bryan for a August address with Dr. Newell Dwight Hillis presenting the opening speech on the opening day. Bryan will appear on the 16th before a likely large local audience in Story County.
S. P. Freed issued catalogues for his fifth annual red hog sale to be held Friday February 12 in a heated tent. Schuyler offers thirty nine head described as fine stock for the event.
Earl McDowell recovering from a month long typhoid attack enjoyed sunshine and began convalescing. Lee Armstrong also regained strength and joined the respite outing the same day. Both boys are listed as convalescing.
Ames high school debaters defeated Bedford Iowa 3-0 on a disputed interstate question about federal control of corporations. The group plans two wins: fund a public library restroom and raise 200 Civic Improvement Society members to fund a main street drinking fountain with an ornate column and electric globe.
Ames Poultry Breeders Association elected Charley Tallman as president Major Rich as vice president Bert Kooser as secretary H S Goble as treasurer Frank Allen as superintendent and several judges to be named The group unveiled a new judging method to award ribbons on the second day of the annual exhibition aiming to boost public interest A separate account notes a late night disturbance and arrests involving two men identified as McGuigen and Armstrong who pled guilty and were fined five dollars plus costs.
In Boone crowd scenes, many pleaded drunk and disorderly after a Saturday night revel. A Nevada man Ayers was the first to resist. Conductor Moran aided Marshal Fultz as authorities processed the incident.
Story county grand jury adjourned with indictments against Robert Hatfield of Missouri and Frank Deverack of Fort Dodge for wife desertion. Hatfield posted bond while Deverack remains jailed. Bid Kilmer of Ames indicted for selling liquor illegally. Tom and Nels Floden of Huxley bonded for furnishing liquor to minors. Additional cases highlighted. a Nevada man may face wife desertion charges if located.
Ames civic group calls for 200 new members to join the Civic Improvement Society. The organization aims to improve the city as a better place to live and visit.
In Story county Iowa land holds its value with two recent buys near Gilberts and on the Nevada road. O O Heggen purchased the Baker farm east of town for 15000 dollars, about 125 dollars per acre, after selling his Gilberts 200 acre farm. M E Livingston bought the old Milo McCartney place for 110 dollars per acre totaling about 17600 dollars, the 160 acre farm to be rented for a year while the Livingston family remains in Ames.
The Northwestern college glee club will visit M. E. Church on February 18 for an Ames concert. The group tours Des Moines and Waterloo and offers a rare mid tour date at a low admission price of 25 and 35cc.
