Ames citizens push ahead with a hotel plan costing at least fifty thousand dollars to create a sixty room hotel with ground floor stores. A hotel stock company would issue forty thousand dollars in shares at twenty dollars each, with an option on Ames lots and a March fifteenth 1909 subscription deadline.
In a wide sweep of damage reports from Thursday night and Friday, homes and businesses across the county suffered. Ames News Stand faced shattered transom and snow intrusion. East End Livery Stable front destroyed. False Work at C A Gamble store blown away but stock largely saved. Ames Laundry front doors blown open with soaked laundry. Holmes Tailor Shop transom broken and snow filled interior. smoke stack at Proper's furniture site toppled. Iowa State College training shed roof blown off. wind mill at Walt Morris dairy collapsed. Postoffice window shattered while fireman Stanley Sheldon kept heat in. skylight at engineering hall broken. Judish drug store transom broken. Hotel Letts chimney blown away. Calves lost near Nevada. windmills reported destroyed. Roland Canning Factory demolished. Numerous individuals named as sufferers, including Hegland and others, reflect widespread destruction.
The district court disposed of two cases this week with two men charged with wife desertion. Frank Devoracek must file a $1,000 bond tomorrow to show he will support his family. Robert Hatfield had a brief hearing and will join his wife and child. they plan to return to Missouri. The bank bought a vacant lot west of the Frank Morris livery barn for $3,000, $120 per front foot, signaling a three story Main Street building this summer. The Mann lot west will align with the bank building, and this period looks set for a record season in local business construction.
Parley Sheldon of Story County purchases multiple business lots, expanding holdings and signaling a planned development. Local officials note the acquisition will impact zoning and commercial activity in the area.
Arthur Bauer of Lough ran and Bauer sold his property at 908 Douglass Street to J G Alexander who resides on State Street.
About twenty five members of the Ames lodge of the Redmen traveled to Boone on No 11 for one of the largest initiations in Iowa. Lodges from Marshalltown Ames Nevada Fraser Carroll Denison Ogden and Des Moines attended with nearly three hundred candidates. The Ladies Auxiliary The Degree of Pocahontas provided a big supper. The Redmen declared the occasion memorable.
G W O'Brien of Ames to leave around March 1 for Seattle with Mrs O'Brien. He hands over his implement business to I J Ferguson and will use his Overland auto for coastal trips while in Alaska Yukon exposition country. They plan to return to Ames in fall and resume residence there.
He and his wife deserve a season of vacation and intend to take it. I. J. Ferguson will handle the business until fall. The Geo. will be back to run it. He is now balancing up his books and getting them in a shape to leave.
Professor W. J. Kennedy of animal husbandry may lead a major midwestern livestock exhibition. The Sioux City Interstate Fair, held annually in Sioux City, is a premier show. Kellogg, vice-president of the association, and Judge J. L. Kennedy, a director, met in Des Moines amid discussions of a possible appointment if salary terms satisfy Kennedy.
The Little Oak Barber Shop on Main Street was sold to Curtis & Shull who ran the campus barber shop in Morrill Hall basement. They opened earlier this week and plan a substantial interior remodel with new water fittings and furniture to modernize the premises.
Joe Berger, a four year professional pitcher, signed a contract to play the 1909 season with the Frisco team. The deal arrives after strong opinion managers expect his major league drafting soon. He notes the contract was received and signed last Saturday and he is doomed to camp with the boys at the first of March.
Rev. W. J. Minchin departs Monday for a month of travel in the west reaching Idaho. Trustees of the Congregational church grant a leave of absence rather than final separation, with Minchin to decide after the period whether his church connection will end or continue. The church and community hope for his swift restoration.
A notice invites youths and others aiming to grow seed or show corn from seed that earned premiums at the 1908 Ames Short Course to write for postal information to EK. B. Howard, Ames Iowa, Sta. A, seeking funds to attend school.
