ISU appoints C A Scott to chair of forestry
At a recent board meeting the Iowa State College trustees elected Prof. C. A. Scott of the United States Bureau of Forestry to fill the chair of forestry. He succeeds Prof. H. P. Baker who left for Pennsylvania State College. Scott has years of forestry experience and has directed the Dismal River Forest reserves since their origin.

Death by his own hand in woods near Burlington
The missing Keokuk physician Dr. G W Jones was found dead in a snow bank north of Burlington. A coroner’s inquest ruled death by his own hand. a pocket knife was in his hand and a revolver at his side. The scene was remote and cold with few nearby farms. Jones, a former Iowa State College student and brother of Senator Clyde Jones of Chicago, had struggled with illness and possible insanity. His belongings included a bird and beast claw collection. John is reportedly improving after the trip.

Hiram Blake born July 19 1832 in Jackson County Ohio died January 19 1908 at his Ames Iowa home aged 75 years 6 months. He enlisted in Co H 128th Illinois infantry serving to preserve the Union later moved to Cass and Marshall counties farms 120 acres. served as postmaster music teacher mayor and school board president. A Mason and Methodist convert, he attended the 50th lodge anniversary and remained active in Comfort Lodge 515 Massena. Funeral at the Christian church January 21 with G A R and Masons present. interment Ames cemetery. He left three daughters Minnie Mote Jessie Thompson Verna Kingsley and survived by wife Nancy Evans.
