Five men attempt hold up Northwestern early train near Bertram
Engineer Mansfield of Cedar Rapids saved the mail train near Bertram, Iowa, when five bandits opened fire injuring him in the arm. The No. 9 train reached Ames at 4 29 a m and was slowed near the Bertram station, nine miles east of Cedar Rapids, as deputies and police scour surrounding timber for the robbers. Mansfield, after being treated, was taken to a Cedar Rapids hospital. other crew remained unharmed.

Victor E. Ballou, longtime Nevada resident and son of V. A. Ballou former editor of the Watchman, died in an accidental railroad work incident at Nempa Idaho on a Saturday. He was about thirty eight years old and well known in Ames. Remains likely to be brought to Nevada for interment.
