Prof. EB T Robbins of Iowa State College resigns to join Alvin Sanders Breeder's Gazette in Chicago as assistant editor and head of the horse department. He has served in animal husbandry and is a noted livestock judge. Firefighters earned quick praise as Ames responds swiftly to alarms.
A small blaze started at the McElyea home last Friday evening due to an oven burner on the gasoline stove in the kitchen. No explosion occurred.
Announcements report the marriage of Miss Lydia Mae Danke and Ira B. Shinkle in Seattle Washington on March 10. Shinkle is a civil engineer and formerly attended college at I S C.
Regular meeting of Ames camp No 458 Modern Woodmen of America set for Friday evening April 9. Members urged to attend and discuss lodge business and upcoming events.
P. P. Brown has added a handsome new dray wagon to his equipment for heavy hauling. He now specializes in transfer work by appointment and piano moving in the city.
Local character Pesky Ginn was arrested Saturday by Marshal Fultz for drunkenness, released after promising to leave town, then jailed again and given three days on the streets. He later left on a citybound car with his small black dog, heading to a place where "they do things."
Gov Carrell names nine members to oversee educational institutions at Ames Iowa City and Cedar Falls. Republicans include Funk Trewin and Holbrook while Allyn Leavitt Schoentgen Murphy Baker are Democrats. Tre win Allyn Foster are noted as farming and animal husbandry enthusiasts.
At a recent meeting Ames Council approved a water contract with Iowa State College to supply dairy farm water at the city rate. A park committee was created to improve and maintain parks and street parking, with members Mayor Tilden Councilman Hoover and J. C. Cope stake. The city attorney was asked to draft a Boone street and Lynn avenue grading ordinance and the deed of Mr Ellis to the city. Officials were appointed for the April 19 1909 election and George Foster was named city engineer. Standing committees for 1909 1910 were set with Hullibarger acting as mayor in Tilden’s absence.
A man involved in a railroad incident never regained consciousness after the crash. Authorities investigation continues as rescuers responded promptly to the scene.
The Young Peoples lecture committee will bring traveler and lecturer Frank C. Travers to Ames on April 5 at the Christian church. He will present his famous talk The Liberator, described as a standout orator of the present era.
The senior high school class play Just For Fun will be presented at the Armory Opera House in the evening of April 17 by a capable cast of young people who are being carefully trained for the piece.
Johnny Gilman a clerk at the Gambe drug store was taken to Des Moines by Dr. Dyer where he underwent an appendicitis operation. Ames friends wish him a speedy recovery.
In county court last week a frostbitten bell-cow led to a lengthy dispute between B F Bell and Mr Ball, who runs a Nevada meat shop. The animal died. Bell claimed ownership and won a verdict of 30.15 with costs and attorney fees bringing total to 40 plus.
After a lingering illness Mrs Adella McCrory Winkelman of Jefferson Iowa died last Friday April 2 Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 pm from the deceased home conducted by the Presbyterian pastor She leaves a grieving husband eight brothers and sisters and other relatives The McCrory family is listed in Dawson Ames Des Moines and this place Mrs K W Brown and Miss Lou Mellor attended the funeral in Jefferson
Bill Myers, once owner of a billiard hall and former resort operator, fled Story City after a Tipton warrant for distributing alcohol. Marshal Dawson pursued but Myers disappeared into the night leaving no clear identification. Curfew whistles have been paused due to Mrs. Mary Little’s illness. Tickets for a Girls Glee club concert are on sale at Judisch Bros. and College Book Store for 25 cents.
James Kelly died in a Colfax hospital after a runaway incident near Maxwell. His foot was caught in buggy gear and he was dragged three blocks and across six [blocks], following an accident a few days earlier.
J. Henderson, a Webster City lawyer and former Iowa State College graduate, is elected to the college faculty to succeed the late Prof. Barrett as lecturer on elementary law. He will teach one day a week for about two hours, focusing on mortgages drainage and related legal topics. He studied science at ISU in the 1890s and earned law training at the University of Minnesota.
A 45 member committee led by M. K. Smith forwarded a hotel proposition with daily updates from Smith’s office. By Tuesday night 13 750 in stock had already been subscribed and Tilden Bros proposed a foundation plan promising rental income of 1800 annually plus hotel revenue, with many leading businessmen optimistic. Citizens urged participation with minimum subscriptions from five hundred to one hundred dollars.
Ames will not play the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Omaha this year. The schedule change arose after Ames gave Iowa the date promised to Nebraska. An attempted replacement on October 30 fell through, ending the season’s biggest midwest game, which Ames regrets.
