City officials plan to place six sets of balls and chains on wandering transients loitering by the Squaw river. A council committee will act to deploy the devices and assign daily labor on streets to those picked up by Marshal Rickett. The aim is to clear a near permanent camp near the railroad bridge south of town.
Marshal Ricketts handled a string of disturbances this week. A Boone visitor intoxicated at Allans cafe was confined to sober up. Two Des Moines bound men arrested at Sears store were jailed and later released after sobering up. A third eastbound rail traveler was put in the lockup overnight.
The city treasurer reports Ames will begin the new fiscal year with about 15000 dollars in credit. Most funds show a pleasing balance with overdrafts small. Council discusses improvement projects and paving plans for Grand avenue and nearby areas, with bids to determine material and timing. Adjournment scheduled for Thursday to continue as board of review.

A waiter left the gas on under a coffee urn and when a match was struck the escaped gas blazed up scorching woodwork and causing minor damage. The flames were put out quickly before spreading.
Central Ames hosts a Story County Teachers Association meeting in the high school assembly room Saturday at 2 p m. Prof Bliss will discuss school gardens and a round table will cover daily challenges, urging all section members to attend and contribute practical value.
A Des Moines Y M C A program will host twelve lectures by college men. Prof. G R Bliss will present six Thursday evening talks on gardening and fruit raising, followed by six Tuesday evening talks by Prof. W H Lippincott on poultry topics.
Professors Bliss Mosher and McDonald will meet with boards of supervisors from about twenty counties to plan county poor farm experiment station work this summer. About twelve boards may favor the proposal.
Dr Seaman A Knapp former president of Iowa State College died in Washington D C Saturday after a three week illness due to a bilious attack. At his bedside were five children and relatives including Herman Knapp Bradford Knapp Arthur Knapp Mrs A M Mayo and Mrs C J Fay. Funeral services were held in Foundry Methodist church and on campus the cortege moved slowly past the hall where the quartette sang Lead Kindly Light.
A Commercial club and school board meeting in Ames High School decided to ask voters in a May 5 special election to authorize the Ames Independent School District to borrow 80 000 to 100 000 for a ward school in the third ward and a high school building with site. The conditions in the current buildings are described as appalling and in need of remedy.
The alumni association arranges the annual banquet for the senior class on Monday evening May 29. Officers listed include Percy Ellis president Earl Smith vice president Ben Read secretary and Arthur Buck treasurer. Committees cover program decoration finance invitation and publicity.
The Cosmopolitan club at I. S. C. hosts an international night with seventeen nationalities. Programs include music readings and discussions on global topics, with faculty and townspeople invited. Chairman Dr. L. H. Pammel.
The Story County Woodmen met in convention yesterday to elect delegates for the state convention in Des Moines on May 3. Thirty six delegates attended representing all parts of the county. Marion Noble of this city and Mr Harris of Maxwell were chosen as delegates.
In Washington and Iowa the memorial for Dr Seaman Arthur Knapp was led by Secretary James Wilson and Prof Herman Knapp with remarks by E W Stanton C F Curtiss and O H Cessna. The service featured scripture, prayer, a male quartet and a grave-side commitment as 46 000 boys are cited in the campaign for better farming in the south.
A grand jury returned eight indictments including EF J Penfield, a Kelley banker. Penfield is not in custody, so the specific charges remain undisclosed.
Monday night Special Officer C A Gregson picked up a man in the yards who looked like Tom Hatch who is being sought by Des Moines police. The man was taken to Boone on No 11 where he identified himself to officers and was released.
The superintendent of streets reports a weekly spring cleanup including park tree trimming dead grass removal and rubbish clearance. Alleys in the business district were swept and hauled away with the Main to Fifth street alley paved and more cleaning planned this summer.
The committee has secured Dr Newell Dwight Hillis to deliver the commencement address at the college. Other commencement arrangements remain incomplete and are expected to be announced shortly.
J. and A. C. Steward delivered eighty bushels of potatoes to the Tilden grocery yesterday drawn by a four horse team in a single jug.
Billy Sunday the baseball evangelist has been secured by Chautauqua management for Tuesday August 15. The exact role on the program is unclear but he is expected to deliver memorable remarks on his return to his youth city.
The Home Economics department at the college moves this week into a new building north of Margaret Hall. Though not yet ready for inspection, it will be shortly. A formal opening is planned for sometime in May.
Mrs W P George comes home from Methodist Hospital Friday afternoon in improved health. The brief notice notes her return and recovering condition.
Elmer Coe fourteen year old son of Seymour and Mrs Coe and former Ames residents was accidentally shot at his Scranton home Monday night. He and a home made gun were involved when the weapon apparently exploded killing him instantly.
Charles Moore of Clarinda arrived to take over the Tilden store as successor to J. F. Ackerman. He has a family and will likely move to town soon.
Norma Lee daughter of Judge and Mrs C G Lee was taken to Mercy hospital Monday afternoon for an appendectomy. She rallied well after surgery and is progressing toward recovery.
Thomas Rowland, recently operated on at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, arrived home Monday in fine shape. His wife Mrs Rowland accompanied him during the hospital stay. Ames friends are pleased by his speedy recovery.
Dr. and Mrs. R. R. Dykstra have moved into the Brown house on Burnett Avenue, formerly occupied by Dr. and Mrs. W. W. Dimmock who have moved to the Fourth ward.
Ronald Barnard son of Mr and Mrs Lew Barnard underwent tonsil removal on Wednesday in a routine medical procedure at a local clinic.
