P C Compton receives letters patent for a cockle separator after a favorable state fair exhibition. The device has drawn flattering notices and may turn Compton into a bondholder. Summer Hotcoms, longtime local official, now works at Ida Grove Pioneer office with a generous salary. Mrs Ropinson thanks Baptist church friends for a warm surprise at their Tuesday festival.
The call invites all interested to participate in cavalry drills mounted or dismounted at the Nevada fair grounds on Saturday September 25. A general invitation extends to all wishing to take part in the drill. The gathering aims for large turnout.
Con Jons Scott of Nevada and others will address the Sheldah Republican club tonight. Col Scott will give his audience a good speech. The Marshall Dancing Factory will close the work of putting up corn this week. Dan McCarthy’s Norman stallion Kiya William, owned with Stoddart and Arthur, won first prize at the State fair, while Biomark placed second. This marks McCarthy’s third straight year winning top honors at the fair.

The Dakin Stough murder case from Marshall county resumes in Boone with a new trial after a prior life sentence. The defendant has spent about a year in penitentiary and questions of fresh evidence loom, making the case a long standing puzzle since the crime.

James Dodds of Franklin township planted 70 acres of flax, harvested 800 bushels, and shipped to Chicago. He earned 1.07 per bushel totaling 856 dollars, surpassing neighbors who sold at 0.90 per bushel and contracted early, leaving Dodds with a 136 dollar margin from his lone venture.

Tuesday noon at the New York Hotel in Des Moines division mail agent John DePew was accidentally shot in the right hand and arm by a playful messenger hitting another with a money pouch. The ball, fired from a belt revolver, lodged between fingers and into the arm, location still undetermined Wednesday morning. DePew escaped death by narrow margin, calling it miraculous.

Educators Gray and Fellows of Yale praise it. adopted by Iowa Agricultural College Maine Agricultural College Michigan Agricultural College Michigan University Ohio University Illinois University Wabash College Indiana and other leading institutions. The book’s success may boost the author financially as a premier American plant scholar.
Monday evening the council met and allowed bills totaling 140 dollars. They passed a resolution for S. H. Shelley to finish the brick veneering on the east side of his building on lot 4, block 13, with a brick partition wall to be shared with Ben Read, and to cover the south side with iron sheeting. Consent from B Read, E W McGuire, and the Misses Sweeney is required in writing before filing with town records.
