Stolen Horses Recovered by Marshal Identify Owner in County

A horse in Marshal Shockley custody since capturing Patterson’s cavalry escaped to a man named W. W. Slaughter of Decatur county. Slaughter paid costs and left Tuesday with his recovered horse. He also claims the grey horse Patterson escaped with. The pair were stolen four weeks ago.

Heavy rains disrupted the Boone District Fair causing its dismissal for now. Directors set October 12 13 and 14 to hold the fair with speed ring entries due September 28 at 12 P M.

The August of 1886 was unusually warm with a mean 23 degrees above normal, a record only matched in 1867 and 1869. The growing season stayed above normal each month since March, totaling 480 degrees, with 13 hot days in August and 42 hot days for the season, nearly twice the normal. The period saw little severe storms, a maximum 2.80 inches of rain in 24 hours at Dysart, a dry first half and drought effects on corn and pastures, then a wet second half restoring verdure and corn prospects.

Mammoth Des Moines River Snake Mate Captured Near Slayton

Des Moines Register reports Mr E G Lobeck of Slayton Minnesota describes a second giant serpent near Slayton believed to be the mate of a previously captured monster. The snake, seen by Dr C L Horner on a Des Moines River sand bar, is said to be about forty feet long and nine inches thick with dark brown and gold scales. It was trapped by sealing its cave with stakes and caused earth to cave in during capture. Some call it an Anaconda. The site is among the wildest western regions suitable for such a creature.
