Shenandoah Valley Campaign Pivots on Jackson’s Blitz

Jackson’s rapid moves against Milroy and Banks culminate in the Bull Pasture and Front Royal battles. He defeats Milroy, then cuts Kenly at Front Royal, pursues Banks to the Potomac, and crosses to Virginia shores just as Banks’s army dissolves. The four major actions reshape Northern Virginia movements and threaten Washington.

Battle of Kernstown and Winchester Clash in Civil War Relay

A Civil War clash known as the Winchester or Kernstown battle saw Jackson attack Shields on March 23 near Kernstown after a March 22 pursuit at Winchester. Jackson’s force failed, suffering heavy losses. Shields reported 544. Jackson retreated toward Harrisonburg, with Banks pursuing to Woodstock. The field saw hundreds buried in a common grave and the feud between Old Jack and Moses was humorously noted.
