Buren R. Sherman born 1836 in Phelps New York. Family moved to Iowa 1955 settling Tama County. He practiced law in Vinton after moving in 1860. Enlisted as private in Thirteenth Iowa Infantry during Civil War, promoted to sergeant, wounded at Shiloh, later returned to service on crutches, resigned in 1863. Elected Governor of Iowa in 1881 and reelected in 1883. Married Lena Kendall Aug 20 1862.
