Cotton compress boiler explodes killing and wounding in city
In the southern city the boiler of a newly finished cotton compress exploded at noon, killing several Black workers and wounding others. The buildings are burning beyond control. No white fatalities reported yet, though several whites were injured. The owner in charge, Mike Pickett of Americus, was last seen inside. Four hundred bales of cotton were burning and authorities cannot determine exact casualties.
