Beginning September we will ask correspondents to cut down communications to actual news transpiring in their neighborhoods as our telegraphic service will take up space. Correspondents must not feel slighted if letters are cut down for we will have no room in our Weekly for anything but actual news.
Delegates from Stewart Webster and Quitman counties met in Lumpkin at midnight to nominate a senator for the 12th district. Quitman absent, Webster and Stewart held 15 votes. W. W. Fitzgerald led with the most votes and was declared the party nominee. Webster delegation objects.
The Pinebark column notes a wet drought ahead for cotton gathering, fears of low prices, and cotton wrapping shifts to cheaper sheeting. It mentions local ginning at Davis gin for 1254 dollars per bale, Rev. J. A. Griffin ending meetings with two additions, and lively social scenes with candidates at gatherings. Readers Leila Whitaker and Leila Ivey are visiting, with several relatives and schoolgoers mentioned, plus a squirrel hunt anecdote and a humorous old adage about a rolling stone.
From Putnam Sept 3 proposed that Seliley County teachers form an organization to improve instruction methods and promote education. In Preston on Sept 1 the Democratic Executive Committee met to nominate a Representative candidate and select delegates for the 12th Senatorial District. David B. Harrell was nominated for Representative by acclamation, while W. M. Sears won the Senatorial nomination. Delegates to the Lumpkin district nominating convention were chosen as W. W. Cantrell, J. F. Wright, Dan Davis, and J. P. Walker. Adjourned with plans to publish in the Reformer.
In Dawson last Saturday Lippman & Co opened the Blue Bar in the former Wm. Wooten bank space with a grand free barbecue drawing crowds. Frank Bethune opened his Excelator saloon barbecue as well, drawing a large patronage and reports of heavy revelry. W. J. Slade opened another bar and grocery in Tom McGill’s former building. Local society notes cover school appointments, new teachers, and moves, plus obituaries for Mrs. Emma E. Jones and farm and education updates amid widespread rain and cotton market notes.
A lively exchange notes crowded cows and the need to condense milk. Mr Waldo of Boston and Mr Wabash of Chicago are called original young men. The piece ends with prices: oysters at one dollar per gallon and ice cream costing more in hot weather.
Wersten County reports a neighborhood fair disrupted by mischief as a mule is freed from Doc Culpepper and the buggy damaged. G D Jones boasts a large cotton crop and high yields. J D Harrell named likely representative with three sheriff candidates listed. Miss Katie Ammons visits Mollie Culpepper during a Methodist meeting. A playful note warns of broken buggies while Hart Co. stands accused of buggy construction. Readers petition for the Recon pen issue.
Camp meeting ongoing since Saturday brings spiritual benefit with few tents and plentiful baskets. Quarterly conference led by Rev. P. S. Twitty. Oglethorpe school opened Monday under Prof. Thomas with many bright faces. Local commerce notes cotton prices steady and good trade. Last Sunday Baptist church welcomed nine new members via Rev. Mr. Stansberry. Social notes mention visitors from Brunswick Americus Macon and other towns. Rainfalls accompany ripe melons in the area.
Edward Sum merford, eleven years old, died August 19 1888 in Sumter county from malignant fever. Buried August 20 at the Snow Methodist church graveyard. He was praised as truthful and generous, and his loss is mourned by his mother and family. The note closes with religious comfort and family wishes for solace and reunion.
