Assassination shocks Sumter area in late Monday shooting
A young man named Robert Rodgers, 21, was shot dead in ambush near Sumter eight miles from town on Central Road. The attacker fled through woods toward the railroad, leaving no clear motive except robbery. Rodgers, a beloved grocer’s son, was chased by a lone assailant who fired from behind a upturned tree, with buckshot and rifle shots. Authorities and black and white residents joined a wide search aided by bloodhounds. no suspect identified, though footprints and a black man seen near the grocery earlier were noted. The coroner and jury found death by gunshot from an unknown party.
