Joiner Builds Dream House With Own Hands In Atlanta
John Joiner, once a patrolman in Americus and charter member of Wide Awake Fire Company, recalls turning a backlot shack into a seven room cottage on Richardson Street. He financed it by saving, paying cash for materials, and working daily, completing the frame by spring and finishing doors, windows, lath, and plaster by the following year. His wife and daughters tended the flowers while the family paid $60 monthly for the lot and house, with neighbors praising the finished home and the family’s self built success.
