Newsboy rides balloon gale to distant plains
A San Francisco newsboy nicknamed Reddy leaped onto a suspended scantling at an Oakland garden balloon test and rode a drifting craft across San Francisco Bay to the Suisan Plains. After a perilous ascent and a broken valve rope, he crawled back to safety using a pocket knife to cut a hole and land five miles from any house, sprained but uninjured.
